I was at the local Whole Foods the other day, and I saw lots and lots of apples. There were local apples, but they were conventionally grown. Then there were organic apples from all the way across the country. Considering conventional apples have a fairly high pesticide residue, according to the EPA, which woudl be the more environmentally friendly choice--local but conventional or distant but organic?

Whizzing one time in the garden eliminates having to flush 1.6 gallons of clean water down the drain. It saves money and reduces water consumption. It might even save a river or a reservoir if the boys took it outside.
No toilet seat to lower. No cleanup if you miss. No more complaints from the women in the family!

Yep, all around a great idea!

to NOT use a living Christmas Tree? I have used artificial trees for years. Besides, real trees cost too much and I would be taking more from the environment.

b) Filling the pot with cool water (thus not wasting any), but it will have a longer heating time and use up more energy?

I have an inter-school science fair coming up and I need to make a project on "Energy conservation". I really don't think that making something like a solar cooker will help me win, as my teacher needs something "big". Can you please help??? Do you know any sites that will help?

I can't find any recycled (made of old papers) office paper (A4 paper sheets) in Swedish shops. As an environmentally concerned person and a member of a university environmental group, I want to influence the university's departments to start using recycled paper for their printing purposes. But if there's not recycled paper on the market, how can we make it happen?

I have an essay due in science about renewable energy. Just like to gather some opinions on these topics, please do contribute, even if its only saying "I agree with so and so" :)

What are some advantages and disadvantages of using:
1) solar cells (photovolitiacs), which use semiconductor materials to convert sunlight into electric current
2) wind turbines
3) biofuels, such as green diesel and lignin

What steps do you think can be taken to increase the use of renewable energy sources? How would these steps help accomplish the goal?

Thanks so much, your opinion helps! As I said, please answer even if you're only agreeing with someone else! I need all the feedback I can get! :)

Isn't that the time when people should have been worried about green living, recycling, saving the planet. If we had worried about it then, we wouldn't be having the problems of today.

Unfortunately stuff that isn't indestructable isn't patentable and corporations don't see dollar signs in this concept? Is this the reason.

I'm leaving global warming out of this equation, cause there is too much hype surrounding it, and it is not clear as to whether man is causing it or not. While whatever we are doing is not helping it, the science just isn't clear cut to me as to whether we are the sole cause of it.

There's a study that asserts that the average bite of food has traveled nearly 1,500 miles before it reaches the lips of Americans. This means its practically marinated in crude oil, doesn't it?

Source is an essay by Bill McKibbon.

I understand the solid rocket boosters must output some CO2, and the large external tank holds hydrogen/oxygen mix to burn to get to orbital speeds(so they try to release as little CO2 as possible), but is it powered by it's own nuclear plant, or does it get all it's electricity from solargrids somewhere, or just off the local grids?

What got me to that idea was the energy it uses to cool down all that hydrogen/oxygen, where does it come from? and is it higher than the amount of CO2 that I use every year!?
