This maybe wrong but i heard that one barrel of oil holds 5.8 Million btu's and one pound of uranium can produce 30 million Btu's...
one pound of wood: 6800
one pound of coal: 12000 (energy consumtion will reach unpresedented hights in the next century, but many scienist are still looking at liquifing coal or gasifing coal!) It's just dumb

What are the best sources for someone to learn more about renewable energy? What renewable energy source do you think is ideal? What articles/books/podcasts/etc do you recommend on the subject? What do you think America's plan should be in creating a more sustainable world?

my question is serious, instead of manufacturing arms and then a phoney war to use them, HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS ( AND JOBS MAKING THEM ) COULD THE WEST HAVE PROVIDED WITH THE VAST AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON WARFARE.
I heard a figure of $2billion a week and thought the money might have been better spent making our own electricity/power rather than raping an innocent country of their resources. surely it equates to 1 million solar panels a week and jobs lost in the arms industry would be replaced by jobs making solar panels and associated products/services?
Anyone out there got any SENSIBLE opinions?
Anyone done the maths to see if my theory stands up?
I'll expect the usual PRO-US abuse, but history is already proving the futility immorality & failure of the phoney war on terrorism.
I am British and paying a fortune to heat/light my humble home, as well as paying immense taxes to send my friends sons off to be killed in an illegal war.
Id rather be paying for solar panels on my house

What is being done or being planned to deal with the amount of garbage we produce and how full our landfills are becoming. What has happened to the recycling concept?

Well I was kind of thinking about solar power and where it would work the best, and the thought occurred to me that both the North and South poles (or at least areas near it) would be the best place to put solar panels because if you think about it they have half a year of basically all day sunlight...I wonder why nobody has already done it (of course I'm sure that it would cost a lot of money)

In Dubai they are single-handedly warming up 3 countries as we speak, so it makes me wonder what it's all about.

Large companies don't seem to be concerned about the issue of global warming and green living either. They continue to put toxic ingredients in their products, and well we the people buy them.

Also environmentally friendly products are not as widely available as their toxic counterparts

So weed is illegeal because you can't put tax on something you grow in your back yard. What about oranges, apples and all greens that you can grown in the back yard?

I can get seed from my next door name that grows fruits and veggies but i can't grow weed brcause it can't be taxed? that sounds like a bunch of BS.

Why is everyone so keen on banning shops from issuing plastic carrier bags? There are many more examples of wasteful and pointless products and packing (e.g. those tiny, solid yoghourt pots) so what is so bad about bags - at least they have a use. I use them as bin-liners, sandwich bags, storage and all manner of other things, if they weren't given out I'd have to buy some. I don't carry an armful of shopping bags with me and I don't use more plastic bags than I have to. Why can't we have the option of plastic or paper bags, as in some US shops?

I've heard many conflicting reports as whether its better sourcing sustainably managed forests for the production of paper or recycling old paper to create new paper.

Apparently recycling paper creates dioxins which need to be "stored" in lead pits as there's no way of getting rid of dioxins. This seems to be incredibly harmful to the earth - in a way, a bit like storing nuclear waste deep in the earth, hoping it won't damage anything/anyone.

Can anyone shed any light?

so what if it takes away jobs dont you think this planet is worth more then that? i seen GMC truck dodge and ford getting bigger and bigger.. why do people need such a big thing? YOU DONT! all the money they use for production on then things that pump pure carbon into the air could go into production of Energy efficient cars and truck.. then with the production you would have your jobs back dont you think?

Ok, here's my question. And please don't be snarky! I know it's super efficient to recycle aluminum - that's clear. But for other stuff (paper/plastic/glass) is it REALLLLLY worth it?
