The most energy efficient shape is a sphere. Geodesic domes provide the largest volume (living space) with the smallest surface area (surface area is what loses energy). Why do people continue to build square or rectangular homes which are the worst shape for emitting energy - most wasteful?

So, the compnay I work for is relocating, and we are trying to go green in the new building. I need ideas that we can implement in the new building to protect the environment.
We already have.
1.low energy hand dryers
2. Natural or flourescent compact light bulbs
3. Low water use toilets
4. Motion sensor light switches
5.Timers for lights
Now I need your ideas!!

Does anyone know of a website where I can find people who like to live simple lives.
I enjoy the simple things in life and would love to purchase a piece of land and live as self sufficient as I could.
Building a home from recycled materials, having solar power and hot water. Recycling etc.
I would like to find a blog of like minded people, possibly meet people who may in the future like to pursue this is lifestyle.
I am not a "tree hugger" or a "peace angel" I just like simple things!
Thanks
Pippa

I keep hearing nuclear energy debates and have yet to chose a side. On one hand, it has amazing possiblities, and can take us farther in the realm of technology, especially if we learn to master a technology that is as risky as it is, but on the other hand, we would rip our world apart in searching for the uranium, and kill millions of people and animals with the waste, and factories that aren't properly secured.

I have been recycling lately and have very little trash now, it is almost all kitchen leftovers and kitty litter. I was wondering if there was anything I could do with either? I live in an apartment, so I am not sure if composting is an option? I do have a small deck but thats it.

Why recycled products sometimes even cost more? I think it may due to the labor and the style. Even so, high prices just discourage people from going green.

Most of it ends up in the bin while billions are owed and billions are in poverty. It seems a strange expression of the season of goodwill to waste so much when there are so many starving.

To leave the house at 58 degrees and just run the gas fireplace in the room that I'm working in, or keep the gas furnace set at 72 degrees and heat the whole house even though I'm not using most of it?

One of the "ingredients" (i guess you could call them) in a fluorescent lightbulb is Mercury. Doesn't that also harm our environment when not disposed properly? I doubt the typical person (who tries to stay "green") disposes of these lightbulbs the right way, being that the majority of the time it costs time & money to dispose of and they probably dont even realize that they are supposed to. Im not anti-green or anything and not trying to be a snob, but doesnt this kind of defeat the purpose?

Does anyone know of any paint that contains no VOCs? I want to paint a stencil on a cotton bag, and I've been using spray paint for my DIY work. Is there some way to paint stencils on fabric without releasing harmful chemicals and gases into the atmosphere? Is it possible to find such thing as a "safe" spray-paint? I don't suppose you can find spray paint that doesn't come in an aerosol can.

Because the process to make glass involves and extreme amount of heat (like 1,000's of degrees unlike plastic) which emits some kinda smoke which is probably some kind of glass smoke which maybe could get into a person's lungs like asbestos...
Also, Glass will cut a person and glass shards can stay in the body just like plastic, just thinking of how to compare the two when walking bear foot...plastic seems way nicer.

I don't know what to do about 5this but my first guess is kind of simple: Can't I just peel off, by hand, the front of the boxes and such - recycleing only the other side? Or is it imbedded inside of the paper too?
