If you are talking about 75 to a hundred years ago, then yes. Folks didn't buy all this junk that we give and receive. Folks got one of two gifts if they got anything. And, often things were wrapped in plain brown paper that was used several times again, or wrapped in fabric that was later used to make something else. Up until about 50 years ago, when one purchased something, they used it until it could absolutely no longer be used and even then, they still tried to find another use for it in a broken state. They saved things to reuse again.
