hey guys,

Does anyone know if there are any recycling centers around the LA area?

Well actually my question is actually:

1. can you recycle paper that has writing on it (ie letters from credit card companies, used notebooks...)?

2. If you can, where is a recycling place in LA that you can either drop it off or call for someone to pick up?

If anyone here knows, please can you tell me.
I have a lot of paper to throw out and it makes me sad to it go to the garbage.
I am just thinking of all those trees going to waste.....

I have quite a few but I don't want to throw them into the bin because of the acid they contain. Is there an environmentally way of getting rid of them?

They are all from 2007 from Jan to Dec....Still in the plastic bags.... I have no desire to look at them...and they are taking up space.... Is there anything I can do with them other than throw them out or is that my only option?

Doubt we could do it all by wind - but combination of wind, solar, hydro, and bio-fuels? Couldn't we provide at least most of our energy without fossil fuels?

i do alot of recycling but was just wondering when recycling a large tub of butter today if it is efficient? As i had to use alot of hot water to clean the tub, then i will have to take a bag of plastic over a mile away in my car for it to be recycled- is the energy used from the washing and transportation of the plastic as well as the melting etc actually using more energy and doing more harm to the environment than just throwing the plastic away would cause? Thanks for your answers in advance x

This is spurred on by a question someone asked about what you would do in a power outage, as she wasn't prepared, and it was an ordeal for her to get through one night, and part of a day with no power.

Many of you (probably most) have city water. By the way, I'm in the U.S.A. and I'm imparting information on the U.S. system, not another country.

If you recieve TREATED city water, and it is almost all treated now, at the very most your city has a seven day supply of clean water for you in a National Emergency.

Checmicals to treat city water arrive on a "just in time" basis. There is not one single city in the entire U.S. that has more than a seven day supply of chemicals. Many only have a three day supply.

After that, the water may become so full of bacteria is it unsafe for you to drink.

Even if you live in cities and have city water, you need to store water in case of an emergency. How many of you knew that?

Mega hydro power projects causes sinking of large area (forest, agriculture land, villages, etc.) which results into depletion of our ecosystem, can't we go for any other form of energy which is clean and still doesn't affect the environment on the large scale and can be implemented worldwide easily.

Has anyone ever has a windgenerator fitted to their house ? In the UK the DIY store B & Q are selling 1kW wind generators, has anyone had one fitted and if so was it worth it? What did you run on it or was it simply a waste of time ?

What can we do and what can the government do to lower the amounts of emissions?

For me:
Walk / ride to work at least once every week; can ride every day but too unfit!
Eat kangaroo meat instead of beef / lamb as no land clearing is needed and more drought tolerable.
Install fluro globes or LED lighting
Close curtains and blinds to prevents heat getting in during summer= less need on a/cond. Install insulation to roof and whirly extraction fan on roof.
The government;
More expensive rego for big cylinder cars and 4WD's
Cheaper car park rates for cars with more than 3 people sharing ride.
A good percentage off water rates for people with rainwater tanks.
All new houses to have solar hotwater, double glazed nth facing windows.

Many more ideas. What do you people think?
