Depends upon the type, but in general recycling facilities for ordinary batteries are quite rare.
Nowadays, there is next to no cadmium, mercury or lead in normal household batteries.
A study done some years ago indicated that it was better to distribute the batteries (as in land fill) rather than concentrate the waste in specialist collection centres.
Lead acid batteries can be returned to outlets such as Halfords.
The result of the chemical reaction in normal zinc carbon batteries is mainly water (H20), the Zinc being used up as part of the reaction.

In a lot of areas you can put batteries into recycling bins. Ask your local council for a list of things they will accept or places that will accept used batteries.

My local authority takes household batteries in the weekly re-cycling collection, though items accepted vary from council to council; best to telephone yours and ask what facility they have for battery re-cycling.
