In my city I think you have to drive to the recycling center to do that. I know of two such centers - one is open very limited hours and the other one I can't seem to find - so I have been throwing everything (including glass bottles and aluminum cans) in the trash. There are recycling bins for paper within a few blocks from my home - that's the only thing I actually recycle. I wish it were different. I live in an apartment. If I lived in a house, I could pay extra and the trash company would pick up selected items and (supposedly) recycle them. A recent article in our local newspaper found that something like 80% of the waste in our city's landfills could have been recycled. The city has now identified this as a concern because the landfills have almost reached capacity. What interests you about this?

Here in China, They have the collectors in the majority of neighbourhoods with their cart bikes. You just you just yell out your window, and they come up stairs and take any garbage you might have that worth money, newspapers, bottles, plastic wood, then you work out a price with them and you sell them your garbage. and they take it to the depot to sell again.its a great system because some people make their living off it, while some people are pushed to recycle to clean up their house and make some extra cash. the only down side is that e-waste is not properly disposed of leading to pollution. and batterys are finally going to get a tax to get people collecting them.
