Stop using "disposable" items to decorate with. Use items that you can reuse after Christmas - like having a beautiful tablecloth in a color that can be used throughout the year, and candles made from beeswax. Give edible gifts (such as cookies or breads) to your friends and family, wrap them in cotton dishcloths that the recipients can reuse in their own homes. Or give "gifts" that don't use any packaging, such as coupons good for cleaning, baby-sitting, back-rubs, etc. or give donations in the persons name (if they like that sort of thing). I learned how to knit and now make blankets, hats, scarves, etc. for friends and family for the holidays. I don't wrap them, just put a tag on them with the person's name, or hand deliver it to them and visit for awhile.

You can eliminate a mountain of paper waste that eventually end up in landfills by not sending Christmas cards... tell your friends you are going green. Donate the fronts of the cards you receive to your local elementary school, and recycle the back of the cards. If you wrap your presents use gift bags that the recipient can use again, skip the rolls of wrapping paper that are bought and used only to be thrown away.

Wrap your presents in the Sunday comic section of your newspaper instead of gift wrap. Buy a live Christmas tree instead of a cut one or a plastic one. You can put it outside when Christmas is over and either plant it or use it again next year as long as you take care of it.

I use plain brown craft bags for wrapping and at the of the day, I gather them all up to reuse. I usually tie them shut with colored raffia and use hang tags instead of stick on ones.
