Organic wet trash like waste food, grass, leaves etc can be used to generate biogas and fertilizer it doesent stink much when done properly.

Other trash can be burnt(except glass etc) in an incinerator to generate power but this can cause pollution due to burning, as to how bad that is, is not known.
