Who runs this country besides oil companies? The pharmaceutical industry!
If the oil companies could make the sun and wind illegal, they would. So think about it, don't you think if weed was legalized and free for the taking that more people would gravitate to its usage instead of going broke on expensive pain killers and antidepressants?
Weed has proven highly touted therapeutic and safe medicinal properties and is now legalized in some states and is distributed under the care of a qualified physician if they feel the situation at hand warrants such administration.

Weed is illegal because when they lifted Prohibition back in the 1930's they could tax alcohol. My dear old mum, bless her heart, told me that weed grew everywhere in the Midwest, but they all wanted alcohol because IT WAS ILLEGAL!
There are many good uses for hemp besides smoking it, which by the way, is still fun. It's too hard to tax anything that grows anywhere. I guess the Feds really dig that cult film of the 30's : "Reefer Madness"!

If it were legal it would be taxed if someone sold it. Just the way alcohol and tobacco are taxed. People still make bootleg booze for illegal sale. Individuals can legally make limited amounts of beer and wine for their family's consumption.
One of the arguments for legalization would be increased revenue from taxes.
Your can grow your own fruits and vegetables. If you start a business to sell them, you will need a license and have to collect sales tax in most states

Thank you WHO for the information, less work for me clattering the keys
To all of you who think Mary Jane is a monster, phooey.
I have friends that smoke daily and function well in their positions. I have friends and acquaintances with PhDs who take a puff now and then and manage to write grant proposals and papers without hesitation. I have been known to do it on occasion, albeit, somehow managed to stay off Heroine and Cocaine, wow, what a feat, not! Half of this country is medicated on some sort of synthetic drug concocted by labs for the sole purpose of monetary gain and yet some of you are afraid of a plant produced by Mother Nature herself?
If you manage your life and the whole experience of living with a modicum of self regulation, nothing and I mean nothing will consume your soul. I'm out!

Actually the marijuana tax act was pushed through in the 1920,s "can you say Harry J. Anslinger?" due to pressure from the southwestern states who viewed the mexican population as an unwanted or unneeded segment of society, and since everyone knew the mexicans smoked weed it was a way to make being here undesirable to them, all the other reasons came later

I honestly have no idea. I guess it's because they still aren't sure whether or not it has any effect on your brain. But what I don't understand is why alcohol and cigarettes are legal, but marijuana isn't. If everyone smoked marijuana, the world would be happier, calmer, and healthier than if we all took up alcoholism and nicotine addictions.

As you have pointed out, it is not illegal because it can't be taxed. It is illegal, according to the head of the DEA, because the people in charge of keeping law and order are afraid that in a country where 120 million people consume alcohol, if they legalize another drug, they will be endorsing countless millions more to use yet another drug. I think if they had it their way, they would make alcohol illegal too.

Weed is illegal because back in William Randolph Hearst's day he had paper mills. Hemp paper is far superior to wood pulp paper but Willie didn't raise hemp he was a lumber baron. He also owned several politicians enlisted to help him make it illegal to grow hemp.
By the way it is legal to grow agricultural hemp in North Dakota.

Weed is illegal because in the beginning of the 20th century the surgeon general decided to increase his popularity by starting a campaign against marijuana. It worked, he got tons of publicity, made everyone afraid of this "dangerous drug" and Congress passed a law banning it. It has nothing to do with taxation.

Fruits are not a Controlled substance.
There are states that have Medical Marajuana Perscription programs for treating cataracts and cancer patience who suffer from terrible side effects from chemotherapy.
As for not being able to grow it in your own back yard because its not taxable, no thats not why you can't grow it.
