solar panels produce electricity which you can use for your home's electrical needs. You would have to have an electric hot water heater to use solar cells to heat the water.

You can also use geothermal systems to heat your water.

Buy a solar pool heater setup and convert it to heat your household hot water. Or build your own with similiar methods. A basic unit would be mounted outside in a wooden box frame and have coils of black pcv tubing to collect the solar energy...a simple shut-off valve on the inlet and outlet could trap the water for heating and then be opened to allow it to enter the house or water heater. A temp gauge and pressure relief valve should be included in the design.
