(in 2005) Coca-Cola's operations in India have come under intense scrutiny as many communities are experiencing severe water shortages as well as contaminated groundwater and soil, directly as a result of Coca-Cola's bottling operations. A massive movement has emerged across India to hold the Coca-Cola company accountable for its actions.
coke recognized their over consumption of water and said this "....As an industry we are one of the most efficient users of water in the country, and as a Company have improved our water efficiency by over 50% in the last seven years."

The biggest waste of water--and the biggest polluter of water, I might add--is animal industry. Go vegetarian or vegan, and you will save more water than a year's worth of showers.

Asking how much water would be conserved if Coke and Pepsi stopped production is a moot point. You could easily insert Coors, Miller, or any other kind of beer and ask the same question. You could also ask the same question of any kind of juice sold in any grocery store. Any beverage for sale is made with water. However, if all beverage production were to be stopped, people would drink more water, and still, there'd be no conservation.
If one really wants to conserve water, do the common sense thing. Don't take long showers. Don't water your lawn, or if you do, don't do it during daylight hours when evaporation is highest. Don't wash your car, or again, do it in the evening so as to not have as much evaporate. If you still want to water your lawn or wash your car, use rain barrels to collect runoff from your roof. This water is as good as any, and your lawn won't care. It can also be stored up, saving it for a non-rainy day, so to speak.
There are plenty of ways, all common sense, to conserve water. You don't have to wait for your local township or city to tell you not to water your lawn. Just stop doing it. And having the "well everyone else is doing it" mentality won't get you anywhere. If everyone else were jumping off a bridge, I doubt you'd follow. Maybe if you set the example of water conservation, your neighbors will follow. It's up to the indivdual, not the government or big business to do the conservation here.

In doing environmental work, you need to look at the most important things. It's easy to get distracted by something that personally catches your eye, that isn't really very important. This is one of those.
By far people's biggest use of water in rich countries is watering ornamental lawns and plants. The greatest water conservation thing we could do is there. Choosing plants that need less water, being sure systems don't leak or water sidewalks, etc.
Next is washing clothes and dishes. Always running washers only when you have a full load would help a lot.
Here are more ideas:

We can save water by using the amount which is enough for us to use. Even if we enjoy taking a bath and splashing too much water on our body, it is really possible for us to use just a pail of water to rinse everything.
Then another way is to reuse or recycle water. In our house, we collect the water that we used in washing clothes and dishes in a big container. Then, we use it to flush our toilets, water plants and rinsing bathroom floors, murals and sidewalks around our house.
Think of how much water we save everyday by doing this practice. We were also able to cut down our water bills. We're helping the environment and we're helping ourselves either.
Hope others would practice this too, so each of us can positively contribute to our environment.

What about these other forms of water waste:
- farms
- taking long showers
- swimming pools
- people who water their yards ALL the time
- Water Parks
- Public fountains
- need I go on....?
We as a nation ARE ALL responsible for wasting water.
It is very sad....
But thanks for making it an issue - hopefully
you made others aware of this problem..
Thanks!
