Well, you should first ask a teacher to help you out. Maybe you could get a "green club" launched if you have an advisor and some members. Work with your local waste dept. {aka trash men} and PTA to get bins placed at different areas around the campus. After school each day. the bins could be emptied and taken down to a recycling center once a week.

The kids at my school work with the waste dept. and have recycling bins around the school. The kids recycle the cans and bottles and donate the money to schools in Africa. I'm saving my bottles up for that purpose myself. Last year, the funds helped build a school in Uganda.

Hats off to you! Recycling is the way to go!! ^_^

I don't know if any of this is relevant to the US but in the UK there are many charities that collect recycled goods - some will even give the school a cut so you could use it as a fundraiser as well. Things we've collected include

Waste Paper - when the bins get full they come and collect them and the money goes to disadvantaged kids

Used Stamps - guide dogs for the blind

Ink Cartridges - all sorts including guide dogs

I'm pretty sure you can get money for Aluminium cans too!!

This is a good american site..

Greetings!

I am happy to find this post. I had the same passion in high school, and still do. I joined the environmental club, and soon became the president of the club.

At my school, we found a teacher who had a passion for the earth, and they jumped on board. We couldn't of done it without a teacher - they have a lot of resoruces and pull with administration.

Once you find a good teacher and other people who want to help (make announcements on loud speaker.... post fliers etc) then your set. Have a meeting each week at a special time .... maybe after school.

In your meetings, start coming up with good ideas on how to help your school, and really look at what they waste. In our school, we decided to put a paper recycling box in all class rooms, and go around each week to collect it. It turns out we had at least a dumpster of paper every week.

Make contacts with local trash companies. They will ususally give you a dumpster and come and pick everything up. This makes your job fast and easy - collection and weekly meetings. Come up with fun things to keep members interested and you will really have an impact - we did.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

John

Wow! That's really great that you want to do this! I think Nacho is right on the money in terms of having a faculty ally as well as a plan proposal before you talk to the principal. Also, don't forget about recyling in the cafeteria. You might want to consider that many area will buy aluminum so if you can arrange to recycle aluminum and sell it to raise money for the school, it would be an added bonus for your proposal. Good luck!!

At my school we started recycling 2 years ago (only paper) and I believe it was started by a small group of students who actually care about something besides getting drunk on the weekends. Try and find a teacher (maybe earth science?) who will help you plan out a sort of proposal that you can then present to the principal (who really won't say no to something like that) just as long as you have a plan worked out, and all he/she has to do is say OK, the administration won't turn you down.
