Take your own bags next time you go to the store rather than getting the "free" plastic bags or paper bags.
Recycle everything you can - boxes, paper, plastic, glass, aluminum
Buy organic and locally grown food products
Change to CFL lightbulbs from standard incandescent
Clean with natural cleaning products such as lemon juice and baking soda or something like Seventh Generation or Shaklee rather than toxic chemicals from the store cleaners aisle!

Water: H2O = Life
Conserving water is probably one of the most important things you can do - without water life will cease to exist and it is anticipated that there will be a shortage by 2011! Most people don't realize that 60% of household water is used by landscape irrigation. I bought a smart controller this year to minimize my landscape water use - it uses weather information from the internet to optimize water schedules. It is awesome - sold by a company called Cyber-Rain (www.cyber-rain.com).

don't buy items that are packaged in unnecessary plastic packaging, buy bulk instead. Don't buy bottled waters that accumulate tons of plastic, even if it IS recyclable, it's still a waste. But a Brita Filter pitcher for water. to name a few

Start a vermi-composting bin in your home to compost vegetable-based food scraps. It's really easy and pretty cool. I have one at home and in my classroom. You need red wriggler worms from the bait store, newspaper and a bin to start.
