Yes, I read Mother Earth New. I will only subscribe to Mother Earth however if I get a subscription card for $10. Anything over $10 is NOT worth it to me for Mother Earth News. They are simply too filled (to the brim) with commercial advertisements.

Mother Earth News rates about 5th in my personal magazine ranking.

Top of the list, and my favorite magazine since I started to read it as a small child in the 1970's, is Countryside & Small Stock Journal. They have almost no advertisements for big companies (a tractor add on the back cover, or an add for Central Boilers seem to be the main "big company" adds.)

The articles are written by the SUBSCRIBERS!! So the articles are really down to earth, and very, very useful for the most part. I now have all the issues from the 1960's, to the present. A simply wonderful magazine I wouldn't part with, and still re-read the old ones (because the information is often still very useful, and informative).

They are a very, very reasonable $18 a year.

My second favorite is Small Farmer's Journal. For me, this magazine is a very close second to Countryside. It centers mostly on farming with draft horses, but still has wonderful and informative articles written on many farm related topics. Again articles are written mostly by the subscriber. Why is that so important? Because you get to learn who, what, where, why, and how people are doing/managing certain farming topics from people who are ACTUALLY in the trenches....not some reporter who did a bit a research, and then wrote an article.

This magazine is $35 a year, and only comes out 4 times a year (winter, spring, summer & fall). It's worth every penny to me. I have a magazine dating back into the 1980's. I'm trying to collect every single back issue, I love this magazine so much.

My third magazine is Backwoods Home Magazine. Again, article written by the subscribers. Wonderful and informative information for everything dealing with self reliant living (WITHOUT being a kooky get a gun and live in a foxhole waiting for the end of the world mentality). I like this magazine so much I want the lifetime subscription, for $477.70.

My fourth magazines are a horse magazine, crafting magazine, National Geographic, Organic Gardening and another self reliant magazine. I usually do not subscribe to those, but buy them as they have articles that really interest me.

Mother Earth News ranks below all of those for me....it's just too "slick."

I have discovered "The Mother Earth News" is an excellent wrapping for my mercury-laced toxic garbage so I can heave it into the creek without getting anything on my shirt.

Yes, I used to get it years ago. Purchased a subscription for 3 years to help out a little school kid I knew. After I only received it for 1 year they sold the magazine and the new owners informed me that they would not honor my other 2 years unless I purchased another year. I felt that was wrong and I dropped my subscription. I found some interesting articles back then. Haven't seen it lately .

Sure, and it has a lot of helpful information about how to live in a natural state. It provides suggestions about how to compensate for the lack of nature in a large city such as Chicago, or San Francisco, or Denver. It also provides information regarding holistic treatment for health compromises, and the benefits relating to understanding self, and how to maintain the growth of self.
