The fact that 12 out of the past 13 years have been the warmest on record is real.

The fact that the square acreage of ice at both polls is shrinking is real.

The fact that the oceans are rising, and that several atolls are already underwater, is real.

Ergo, global warming is real. However, the real debate is how much of it is caused by us, and how much of it is a natural cycle of the planet. After all, this planet HAS been through many cycles of of heating and warming.

Someone likened this to religion? Exactly true. Its like atheists and Christians going back and forth...and neither changes the other's opinion, or "belief", one millimeter. Quit trying to convince the unconvinced, and tell them how much money they can save by "living green". Those that can't get their hands around the entire planet can certainly get their hands on their wallet.

well not really. consider that the study of weather on earth is something which needs to be measured over many millions of years. if you looked at the pattern over these many millions of years like a graph, you would see it getting warmer and cooler (sorta like a sin curve). within these changing curves, the curve would wiggle around up and down.

so we only have data for a hundred or so years - which is nothing reliable at all! we are in a tiny tiny moment in time where the trend in weather might be getting a little warmer. there is no way to say anything conclusive about that. anyway, if a volcano erupts, which one does quite often, it puts out more pollution than mankind does in a year. so, i'm not convinced.

I just read an article positing that 3 of the 5 big extinctions weren’t caused by asteroids, they were caused by CO2.

Something about massive volcanism covering all of the Siberian Traps (because of continental drift), CO2 hits 900ppm (from the volcanos), then the chemistry of the oceans change (because the amount of CO2 dissolved in the ocean changed), anaerobic bacteria take over (from the deep, where live now, because the entire ocean becomes hospitable to them) and burp out planet killing masses of hydrogen sulfide (that suffocates everything, including plants, and rains down as sulfuric acid).

This guy got curious because two of the extinctions show up as point events, but the other three are spread out over thousands of years.

CO2 was 320ppm in 1960 and is 380ppm today.

miketorse: Actually, the global warming "debate" has many aspects of faith and religious ferver involved...though it's generally pointless to discuss it with people who have bought into the dogma.

Uhhhhh "believe in it"??
It is not a random unproven theory, it is something which is fact and also established scientifically. It's not a religion or anything.

Your a moron if you don't believe that it exists! But your also a moron if you think that it means the end of the world-like Al Gore does!

there is not believing. its like asking if you believe in the dinosaurs. it is scientific fact. i think they may not have all the answers as to when it will happen, but it will happen.

It's not a f*cking religion people.

It's scientific fact.

"scientists are exaggerating"? Brother, I hope my daughter grows up in a world without you.
