Part of my new years resolution was to be a bit more "green" this year by taking care of the environment a bit. What are some tips for living a more environmentally conscious lifestyle?

I've noticed recently that birds are now singing throughout the night. Several posters on the Yahoo message boards report the same (there are a few at this thread: http://uk.messages.news.yahoo.com/Climate/threadview?bn=UK-NEWS-CLI-Global+Warming&tid=3035&mid=3035&tof=1&m=tm&rt=2 ), but no one has provided an explanation yet.
I know that artificial lighting can cause birds to sing when they'd normally sleep. We have a street lamp at the back of our garden, but until the last few months (and unusally warm winter weather) this didn't seem to disturb the birds. I've also heard the same nocturnal singing in other areas around the English North West.
Can any ecologists/zoologists/learned enthusiasts out there shed some light on this for me?

They say that if we don't do something about global warming, we will all be underwater... Tell me if my idea to help prevent that from happening is good or not.

I first thought of something simple. Say your 7 years old and you want to make a little snowman inside your home. So you take a hand full of snow and put it in a metal pot, overtime, the snow will melt and turn to water, then you put the pot outside and the water will evaporate.
If we did this by taking parts of the glaciers and doing that, would it help?

In Victoria, Australia where I live we have water restrictions in place which means we can't water driveways, footpaths, etc (who would anyway? Use a broom, people!)... and they're getting stricter (no washing cars, no watering gardens outside of set times)...

All this is GOOD, I'm certainly not complaining! Just wondering what tips you guys have for everyone out there who would like to make a difference to our environment.

Here's my first tip: put a bucket under the kitchen tap and use that water to rinse dishes, wash vegies, etc.

I'm from Australia and we've had lower than average rainfalls for a few years, resulting in widespread droughts and state-wide water restrictions. Is this happening elsewhere in the world?

I think there should be commercials popping up all over the TV and radio. People spend millions on magazines. There should be educational advertisements in those magazines. The celebrities will draw our attention and people want to know what their "idols" are interested in.

Do you think it costs you more to recycle personally or to just throw things away...and how much either way. I'm talking about household or at work, but just personally.
