I am helping seventh graders write short stories. We have already worked on setting, and now we are going to work on character development. What are some good, age-appropriate books that I could exerpt from that would show good examples of what can happen to a character/transform a character/change a character's life?

I work in a private school in Illinois. It says in my contract that they can keep 3% of my salary if I break a contract. Will they really do this? I have been teaching for 5 years at this school, and I hate it. Besides being constantly sick, I am not Christian and have a difficult time swallowing day-to-day dogma. For some reason it's gotten harder as I've grown older.I want to get a job in writing, and I never ever want to teach again.

I teach university-level Writing II and we will be doing group writing project. I am now sure, however, how much I can control this, but I am looking for some ideas to help ensure that my the project is fair for all of the students. I think I'll give a survey at the end, so students can tell me if one or two students slacked. I'll be giving both individual and group grades. Any other ideas? Thanks!

I'm thinking of becoming an elementary school teacher, and I was wondering if you could tell me some things you like and dislike about doing it. Anything you would have liked to know before but noone told you? Feel free to add anything you think of! Thanks!

This question is coming fresh off some anger I have... I am a substitute teacher who used to love her job. Lately the kids have seemed more and more mouthy, with absolutely no respect for authority. Parents are not teaching their kids how to accept "no" for an answer, and kids don't even understand the most basic acceptable behavior. It's ridiculous. I couldn't believe some of the comebacks and comments I got this morning, after asking the students to do the simplest, most obvious things! It's not the teacher's job to raise kids, parents... YOU NEED TO DO IT. I can't wait until I have my own class next year. Some of this behavior will be absolutely unacceptable to me... and I will call the parents on it. Can't do that as a sub.

The time-honoured pearls of eastern wisdom tell us that only a students having complete devotion to the teacher can acquire true knowledge; also, true knowledge gives modesty. The evaluation of teachers by the students is an imported practice from the west, that too only in recent times- it is doing more damage to the students than benifitting them in any manner. Do you agree or you don't? Why or why not?

Place on the screen the teachers who had taught you and look at what good did you see in them. Look also at the students around you who are now more informed and intelligent and how do you measure them up by their good standards. Let your answer be in detail as I wish to pass it on to the Teaching Community through my web blogs. lileeann

I am a graphic artist and I knew that I was going for that field about age 11. I am now 34 and have a good job designing web sites. But do you think I would have been at this point earlier in my life if all through high school and collage I was able to purse art instead of learning history and binary math? This question can also be fielded for other professions beside my own. Also I do not use history or binary math at all in my current work or my personal life. So was it a waste of time or not?
