I am teaching right now in 4th grade and have a student who LOVES to read. He will read any chance he gets- what a problem, right? Well, the main problem is that his reading will occur during math, cursive, transition periods, etc. He gets absorbed into his books and only comes back to reality after I call his name 3 or 4 times. He is doing fine in these other subjects, and I don't mind that he reads except that he never finishes work unless I stand right by him. And when we do cooperative groups, he complains and a few times has gotten tears in his eyes. He is only 9 and I want him to continue his love for reading, but he is missing out on the social interaction, and I fear that he will have problems in his future, especially since he is a lot smaller than his peers. He gets along with his classmates, but it takes effort to get him away from his book and talk with his peers. Any suggestions?

Which ones are used to minimize time requirements? Thanks so much. I just need some opinions from some teachers as to which techniques they like best.

I am working at one place right now, where I do not have any problem. I tried for another job and I am offered good money and a position. They called me and give me an offer letter also. But, after giving lot of thoughts, talking to my friends, family members, relatives and office colleagues. I feel my present job is more suitable to me, mentally as well as physically & monitory also. So, how do I refuse a new job offer, by not harming my credibility and relations with them ?

I am a middle school teacher and it seems to me that schools are not keeping up with social changes. Why do we consistently avoid talking about subjects such as sex and drugs? Yes they are controversial...Yes they may cause a bit of anger. With the parts they play in the lives of young people today, why do we shy from our chance to promote change? If we don't teach them about the world, who will? Parents sure aren't anymore.

I am the manager of a remainders bookshop that also sells art materials, children's activites, paper, paint, etc and wanted to hold a teacher's evening. I was going to send out a letter to all schools in the area detailing all the things we sell (people often think we only sell books) and the prices and then hold an evening for teachers.
When would be the best time over the next month or two to hold it as far as school holidays (UK), teachers needing materials, etc?Any other tips to make it successful would be great!
Thanks

I have a B.A. and have taken and passed the CBEST (7 years ago). Is my test still valid? Do I need to take any other test(s)? How can I get an emergency teaching credential? Do you know any websites that will provide me with information? I just want to teach while I wait to be admitted to my graduate program.

This question would actually cover linguistics (language acquisition) and phonology/phonetics... (speech = oral/aural comminications, in particular)
so these are my activities: pronunciation drills, tongue twisters, dictation drills, impromptu speech, oral reading,
American Accent Training:lecture n activities, cable tv watching, song listening&singing, and inclusion of TOEIC listening:exam and analysis...We do most of the activities in isolation...but most of my materials could be categorized as high level, or above intermediate. the problem is my students level is not restricted...so studetnts of all levels come in and out...among those who stay for quite a while seem to force themselves to stay focus, when inevitably they get dizzy, although i know,i sometimes get so serious too...but my most of my students who stayed and survived with me in class, were actually improving and progressing...So it gets me to wonder,do i bore them,or is it just too difficult, what activities should we do?

I'm teaching English to kids and my boss really wants to kids to enjoy the class because they are still very young and get bored or fustrated easily. My students are 3-6 years old and 9-12 so if anyone knows any good games I play with them that they will enjoy and learn from at the same time, it would make my life so much easier. Thanks

I teach high school mathematics and I'm always looking for new ideas. It's my first year of teaching and some of my consequences for behavior problems work and some don't. My school does not have a detention and I am not allowed to hold one. In fact, my administration is not very supportive at all, so I'm looking for more creative and effective ways to discipline students. One of my consequences is that they have to copy all the words out of the glossary of their text book under a certain letter, including diagrams. This has been a good consequence. The kids don't like it so they avoid getting in trouble again if that is their consequence. I call parents and occasionally send kids to the office if it's bad enough, but it's not very effective. I'm just wondering if there are other teachers out there with more ideas on ways to discipline students creatively without isolating them. Thanks.
