seriously, i'm teaching middle school in an inner city nyc school, and it's out of control. besides being cursed at daily, i have really had it! the kids are out of control, and i also feel ineffective as a teacher...no, ineffective is too sugarcoated, i feel like a failure.
so, should i stay till the end of the year and continue down this path of self-flagellation, or should i get another job. Mind you, this is my 4th year teaching, but first in the south bronx so i know i can teach , but i just think that teaching in teh inner city in nyc is just too tough. i'm too sensitive and nice...so. basically, wrong place, but should i stick it out? it looks bad on a resume if you quit mid year, but then again, it's horrible on my nerves and self esteem to stay...not to mention that the depression from teh job stress is starting to affect my relationship///

I teach a 6th grade health class and I am a first year teacher. This class is horrible and are very disrespectful. Every minute I am telling them to be quiet, get back to work, keep your hands to yourself....I really need some suggestions on how to deal with them. I dont want to give them detention because most of them are already in it...so is there something else I can do in the classroom that will make them change?

There was an still is a national debate in my country about icons in schools, whether to remove them or not. I really don't think that icons are what we should focus if not in what conditions the children learn.I m talking here about learning without any heat, freezing, without pcs or proper food.
What do you say? What's more important?

However, I am told that it is extremely difficult, unless you "know someone". This is especially true for the primary grades. Does anyone have any advice?

I have an idea to be helpful by teaching some subjects to needy or poor students who really want to study but need some guidance and tuition. But I don’t have any idea that how can I start it and which are the places where I can find that type of students? Sometimes I think that am I able to do this alone or not?
I am doing job so I can give my time to do it only on Sunday.
Are there any groups engaged to provide this type of services? So I can join it and will provide my help.

Thanks

is it, "this will be beneficial to the class and me" or "this will be beneficial to the class and I"
then why would you put "this is beneficial to me" and not I, yet with two things you do use I

I have my first job teaching. My neighbouring classroom teacher has atleast 20 years more experience than I do, even though she is extremely lovely I find her highly strung and not confident. I found out she cried on a staff only day ( I'm not sure what it was about but it was work related) I'm a strong person ande confident and although I feel sorry for this woman I do not want to be her crutch to lean on. Wat should I do?

What would be some good sources (books, videos, websites) for learning about learning? Are there any paragons of the field?

Also, is there a name for the study of learning about learning?
It's hard to find a holistic source without a more distinct word for this...

I've been teaching for 14 years, but am thinking of changing careers. Any ideas of what to do?

Teaching is getting harder, the kids are getting more and more rude and disrespectful, and I'm not enjoying it as much as I used to.

We live in a non-English speaking country and I need to be able to help my son (4 yr) learn to read English as well as the language they speak/teach at school. He speaks both languages fluently. What are the best methods to teach reading and what books should I buy (we have some Dr. Seuss, and others)?

I am looking for methods on how to motivate teenagers. In specific I am looking from a teacher’s point of view and trying to seek some guidance in the tricky task of getting teenagers to be excited and enthusiastic about learning.

As a parent I am also looking for these same things.

So, in short, my question is this

As a teacher, how do I get kids to WANT to learn?

As a parent, how do I get kids to WANT to go to school and learn?

Thank you SOOOOOO much for the help!

I teach 8th grade and I've always believed in being respectful, fair, consistent, energetic, and caring to the kids. Sometimes I feel like they are too young to understand that when I treat them well and pay attention to them and their lives, that those things are done to help motivate them and get them through the middle school years. As the year progresses, I usually run into increased disrespect, like this week for example. I know if I come in the door and act stern and even speak loudly and firmly, they'll listen and not get out of line. I'd rather not do that, but sometimes I have to. When I do, it doesn't sit well with them because they are used to me having a positive attitude.

I try hard not to deviate from how I feel things should be done, but sometimes I feel like they aren't old enough to get it and that I should change how I handle them. I'd just like to hear people's thoughts on this and if anything has worked for you in the past or if you have any suggestions.

I screwed up in chemistry, where I used to have an A, but after the start on November, I began to struggle with it. The teacher that teaches us did and still does a poor job at teaching and assumes that we know everything. We were given a test today, and all the stuff on it was stuff we haven't even learned how to do,all thanks to his poor teaching. I have thought of ideas on what to do, stay in this class and hire a tutor, or drop this class to be in a lower, easier chemistry class. Any ideas would help please. Can you give me an idea on what to do?
