I think teaching is the ability to pass on knowedge from one person (teacher) to another (student) combined with the ability to inspire and make learning a desired process for the student.
A good teacher is one with great insight who has the ability to motivation combined with tolerance and genuine compassion.
One need not be an educator to be a teacher. Mentors, although rare, exist elsewhere and one can learn many things from many sources outside of just the "school system".
Parents, especially mothers, are the best teachers (or in some cases, the worst).

Teaching is the act of instructing how to do something the correct way. If one is accepting incorrect instruction then one will struggle with self-destruction until they deal with what they have chosen to believe.

Not quite what you asked, but Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary defines education as 'that process which reveals to the wise, while concealing from the foolish, the extent of their ignorance.'

A teacher is one who dispenses coursework information and evaluates the comprehension and utilization of it in some instances.
There are two basic kinds of teaching:
"credit" and "continuing education"
In credit coursework the teacher evaluates the student. In continuing education coursework the student evaluates the teacher.
