Because they are paid considerably less than say...a NFL football player, a fancy restaurant cook, most management positions, some people on welfare, etc., etc.; yet, we trust them with the most important people in our lives, our children.

The same reason everyone else does. I make 42,000/yr. I have a house note, car note, one son in high school who plays football and track. His letterman jacket alone cost me $250.00.
Now he's running track and I just wrote him a check for $70.00. I also have a son in college.
He is having difficulty with college algebra and I am paying 30.00 every Saturday to have him tutored in this. We also have to buy clothes and eat like everyone else and would you believe I spend money every fall buying supplies for my students because I teach at a title 1 school and the parents are too poor to send what their kids really need. Then there is christmas time, when I support one or two students who would have not christmas otherwise. Today my heat pump went out and I spend 278.00 having it fixed. I haven't had a new pair of shoes in two years, even though I stand on my feet all day teaching 6 & 7 year olds. Add it up, you'll figure it out.

They do?
I know that public school teachers strike from time to time, but I teach in the private sector. I can't strike and I have never asked for more money. I get an cost of living adjustment each year. I'm happy.
When government employed teachers, who often don't get yearly increases, ask for more money, I think it most cases, they are entitled to it.

Because there is never enough to begin with. Try teaching without toner in the copier, and if you say don't make so many copies then how am I supposed to teach the children how to write? Books are costly...some children havne't had good parenting and come to school showing little or no respect for the materials. It goes on and on.

Most teachers are highly underpaid and most of us spend way too much of our own money just to maintain a classroom. I have to buy my own Lysol to spray the computers to cut down on the germs, I buy replacement hall passes because the kids lose them, I buy a lot of my own office supplies because the cheap pens they get at school are so dried out due to bulk ordering. I also end up buying replacement typing paper holders because I am only allowed to buy items ONE time each year.
Plus we are the first each kid hits for buying Girl Scout cookies, Boy Scout popcorn, etc. As teachers, we are very into charities.

Doesn't everyone?
Teachers have the potential for incredible job satisfaction if they find the right fit in the right school---but that is only way they will ever be rich.

...uum I think the question should be why are teacher's so under paid, they are the one's stimulating the minds of the future, I mean taking time and creative approaches to ensure that children learn things that will equip them for the world...without them there would be a great problem in society...so once again why are they so underpaid???...things that make you go ?hummm?

They need more money to support their families and to pay back their educational loans. Going to college isn't cheap. Besides they are underpaid for all that they do and all that they have to put up with.

BECAUSE, WE ARE ENTRUSTING THEM, WITH OUR FUTURE,OUR CHILDERN ARE OUR DESTINY.besides teaching, they help shape their morals, character (which is hard if not done at home) they protect them-some have with their lives! many times they have to battle with spoiled brats & parents. the goverment has set extremly hard goals ie; more education & programs to implement. i am so grateful for them!
