the activities you choose depend on the age of the student you are tutoring. anyhow, brainstorming activities are really good. you can relate it to the topic of the day's lesson. Ask your student to say or write down any words related to that topic.
you can also use language games at any age. you can find multiple language games on websites such as abcteach or schoolexpress.
You can also get a picture of something related to the lesson and ask your student to talk about it .
Actually any ice breaker depends a lot also on the content of the lesson

Don't do an activity. This will most likely alienate the student. Just talk to them about how their day was and what they like to do with their free time. this will not only give the student the opportunity to let loose and trust you but you will also get to know them better. Also, when you are trying to relate their schoolwork to their personal lives, you will know how to do that.

Usually when I hear someone asking about an "ice-breaker," I know that that person worries too much about things instead of doing what seems natural.

If you are tutoring for language arts, go to a library. If you are tutoring for math, hit a park and calculate height of trees or perimeter of the lawn, etc.

Put them at ease - have them tell you WHAT THEY DO KNOW about the subject. That sometimes gives you an opening. I use it in the classroom (college students).

well there is this really cool game u can play. first, pick a letter of the alphabet. say, it is 'b'. now, one of u says an object (thing) that doesn't begin with that letter. now, the other person has to say another thing that is related to that object, but doesn't begin with the letter 'b'. u have to do this quickly for it to be fun. continue until somone hesitates or says a thing that begins with the letter 'b', or the letter u guys chose.

Have them complete the following sentence:

"If I could have lunch with any person, living or dead, it would be _______________ because ________________."

Doing this has proved out well for me it created a healthy dialog between myself and others.

Best to you,
