I teach in one of the most impoverished parts of the United States. Sometimes it is appalling how similar to a third world country this place is. Unfortunately, the education system is equally as impoverished. I struggle to teach children who are 16 to 18 years old and cannot read and write, let alone add and subtract correctly (I teach high school mathematics). They have been socially promoted over and over again. I have maybe 10 students out of 120 that can read above a third or fourth grade reading level as high school students.

One of my biggest issues is that these children have never been allowed to think. They've been taught trick after trick to pass a state test (which they BARELY pass) but they don't understand what they're doing. They look constantly for the shortcut around understanding. I am looking for ideas and activities I can use to start to encourage my students to think for themselves instead of depending on me to always give them the answer or the shortcut

I graduated in high school as valedictorian. But it was controversial. Most teachers thought that i am not deserving coz i they don't see me in the church every sunday and i have problems with my parents. For them i am plastic and everything i do in school which are goods they considered me plastic coz they thought i am doing that because of grades. They think i am bad and my intelligent is useless coz i am not religious.
This is actually very traumatic on my part so that i cursed that valedictorian and promise to myself that i will never exert much effort in my academics in college as what i did in high school!
I hate those teachers!!!
I agree that a valedictorian must possess better qualities personally but i never campaigned to everybody that i am good!! to say whether a person is good depends on others view. it is subjective to the teachers. i was still a teenager that time, and i believed that i am not different to others. Though i am academic excellent ,

Right now, I am a student teacher, but I will be graduating this May. I am not holding a job at this time because of the high demand of student teaching. I have saved up enough money to last until I graduate. What should I do if I'm offered a job in teaching that would require me to relocate to a new place with me being absolutely broke when the day comes for me to move?

I have a C in my class, I feel like i deserve a C+. Yes i know that sounds ridiculouse, but that C+ will let me transfer. What are some good points to make in the duscssion that can persuade the teacher to raise my grade. I have showed up to every class, and done everything. The only reason my grade is not good is due to tests, which i am not good at taking.

Any suggestions?

To get answers for their homework?

I've seen kids ask questions in all areas of schooling - even some that seem to be in desperation mode - as if they are in the middle of actually taking a test while they ask the question.

Does this go un-noticed? Is this encouraged? Is this factored in when grades are given?

What's the deal from a teacher's perspective on this.

I've been applying for teaching positions and several districts require an on-line 'personality survey' done by the Gallup company. It was introduced in a way that made me think it was going to spit out teacher-types like 'strict disciplinarian', 'fun-loving entertainer, 'nurturing empath', etc. After visiting the Gallup website the reality is that it spits out probable personality traits and a numerical score based on how successful Gallup thinks you'll be as a teacher. They figure this by interviewing 'successful' teachers (no mention is made of how one is deemed successful) and then comparing your answers to their answers. Please note, these are not scenarios that test teacher judgement. They are things like 'I started thinking about becoming a teacher a) when i was young, b) in college, c) when I experienced some teaching scenarios d) i have always wanted to be a teacher. Is it fair to use this test as a primary screening method? is this test being used across the US?

I am taking a class where I have to find ideas to teach ELL students. If you have any great ideas let me know by answering these questions.

What kind of strategies or modifications do you use to maximize English language development in your classroom?

What kind of certifications do you hold to teach ELL students?

I have tried a variety of starters in class, and I have not been happy with any of them.

In English, I have tried various forms of journals (quote responses, tailored to the day's work, current events response), grammar exercises (workbooks, corrections, you name it), and a hybrid where students (supposedly) revised the same paragraph over the course of the week.

In Spanish I, I have had students make charts breaking down meaning & form of cognates, translate simple pop songs, conjugate sets of regular verbs, and answer questions about weather maps.

I want something to get them in thinking mode and settle them the heck down. They always seem to think starter time is chatting time and then wonder why they don't don't have the starters done when it's time to turn in.

I'm thinking trivia or brain teasers, but what would be a good source for these that would keep them BUSY FOR 5-10 MINUTES while I take attendance and maybe check work, that would CALM THEM DOWN?
