Homework should be a review of thee student work of the day. 1-2- is new 3rd is some new more review. ( that is why they give the 3rd and 6th grad test. Homework should not be used to teach only to review. If u or your child is spending more than 30 to 40 min a night. I would question what is the teacher doing? how many students in the class?

Some people say that they have to cover a certain amount of material in a year. But as a student teacher, I saw a lot of filler activities and busy work. Really, there is no reason to give homework over a break. Teachers who do give homework might not be utilizing their class time efficiently, or they may feel that students who do no school work over breaks will forget some of what was learned already. Personally, I am an advocate of eliminating homework entirely. I think that all teachers should read "The Homework Myth" and "The Case Against Homework." I did want to warn you about one thing in your future job. You probably will not be given homework by your boss while you are on vacation, but you may come back to find that your workload has piled up in your absence. Then you end up needing to do double the work for a while to catch up. It is pretty stupid, and hardly a vacation at all, in my opinion. But that is the way some companies operate.

Teachers can stop giving students homework provided that the students will go and look for work to do and practice and train.
To answer you question consider this:
would Beckham or Ronaldo or Hingis or any of these top world class sports personality be where they are if they don't train enough?
there is a direct relationship with time spent studying and the results obtained. This is from ancient times.
You sow - you reap. You don't sow - you don't reap. Simple.
Take a look around those kids who are not achieving and compared them with those who went to Varsity etc. and ask them about the amount of homework done... and you will have the answer.

YES!!! When I am waiting for the bus in the
morning, there are 3 little girls waiting for the school
bus and they have backpacks that are so heavy
they can hardly stand up. This is rediculous to
give little 8-9 yr olds this much homework each
night. Are we trying to copy Japan and China.
Their whole life focuses around education from
the time they're born. They are never free to be
just kids.

No...kids should have no lives but school and homework...how else are you going to keep from blaming someone else for your failures.
Besides you didn't give a reason why they should or shouldn't.
