I recently graduated with a B.S. in psychology. Is there a faster way to get certified to teach high school english, instead of going back to school?

I got a "best answer" once before with this question several months ago. Here's what I wrote then. The advice is still good. BTW: Be sure you have the required number of credits in the discipline you want to teach (I think it's 20) in order to enter the certification program for that subject.

Texas law says you must be "highly qualified" in order to be hired. In other words, you have to either have your certification in hand or applied for and on the way. Private schools are not bound by this law, but many follow it anyway. Besides, pay at private schools is even lower than at public schools and they usually don't give benefits.

The good news: there are all kinds of alternative certification programs all over Texas. They take between 1-2 years to complete, and the cost of the program is in the neighborhood of $3000, but there are grants available. Check out this website:

It is for the Texas State Board for Educator Certification. The very first link tells you how to become a teacher in Texas.

One other piece of advice. I took the course at Blinn College. I completed it, am happily and successfully employed, but I don't recommend their program. It is too heavily dependent on distance learning (internet courses) and provides very poor hands-on learning.

I believe that a Master's degree in teaching psychology will be required, I would get it if I were you at this early stage, and then you have to pass a State Exam to get certified to teach in Texas.

NO
You have to go back to school and get a teaching certificate. Another year or two of school and a year of student teaching.

It is legal to teach secondary with an elementary education degree, but it is preferred to have secondary education, and is unlikely you will be hired without it.
