Typically, a Bachelor's degree in Eng/Hist/Math/Liberal Studies/etc. and a Master's Degree are the norm.

In California you do not need a Masters degree you only need to have a bachelores and pass some state tests and take a few state mandated classes if you degree does not include education.

The most important website you should check out is OSPI...the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for your state and see what the requirements are there. Not all states require a masters though you should get one if you want to earn enough money to pay your bills. Here in WA state we have programs in which you can get your masters and certification at the same time. Good luck.

I'm not familiar with Texas, but most states require you to take tests (Praxis, etc) that show you are competent in the areas you say you want to teach. These are usually taken while in college and after you graduate, and are then used when you apply for a teaching certificate for whatever state you are hoping to teach in.
