It depends on the district. Each school district sets a specific number of attendance days which doesn't necessarily have to be the same as other districts surrounding it. The district my son goes to has 183 pupil days and 184 staff days, the district nearest to us also has 183 pupil days but 186 staff days (staff development days). Also the days that the school is in session may differ from district to district....our school celebrates all Federal holidays, gives a week break for Holiday (Christmas), Winter and Spring Recess, other districts near us also give days for Jewish holidays such as Yom Kippur.
According to the NYS Education Department, school districts must be in attendance for all students, including students with disabilities, for no less than 180 days which includes Regents exams, state assessments and local examinations. Up to four superintendent conference days are allowed (non pupil days). This is all mainly for funding purposes, and for that, elementary school, grades K-6 needs to be in session for 5 hours, where grades 7-12 need to be in session for 5.5 hours.
