As a teacher, what observational recording techniques do you like best? Preferences for graphing that data?

Which ones are used to minimize time requirements? Thanks so much. I just need some opinions from some teachers as to which techniques they like best.

I'm not sure what subjects you're talking about. I do have my students take "Mad Minutes" tests of basic facts in the four operations, and then graph their progress. I have also used one-minute fluency probes and the benchmark tests from readinga-z.com

But my favorite thing for teaching reading is a simple little anecdotal records routine. I have a manila folder sectioned into little boxes, one for each student. At the beginning of each week, I put a little 1 in. Post It in each square. In my guided reading groups, I watch the students and write down an observation--"supported statement about theme with text evidence". At the end of the week, I take all of the Post-Its and put each one on a page that I have for the individual students.
