I will be entering my junior year of high school next year and I can either take Honors Pre Cal or Advanced Functions and modeling. I can't decide what to take. I am not a fan of math, though I have done well with it in the past. I am also taking AP Gov, Ap Env. Science, and AP Language 11. My question is, if I want to go to a good college like UNC Chapel Hill, do I need to make it to Calculus in High school?

Again, computers in schools are taking away from the needed literary skills. Does anyone have a solution? I have found a few, such as:
*Complete new crop of learning software
*Use computers only during recess or relaxation periods.
Both of these ideas are great, but I am also looking at middle and high school students affected by this.
This is for a Problem-Solution Essay, and I am stuck. Help!

My 16 year old son was asked to do an art project of any person. This
project consisted of making this persons face out of clay, then putting in a
kiln. My son chose Hitler. The reason he chose Hitler was because he was
learning about him in his History class, which they have pictures of Hitler
on the wall in his History class, so he thought that would be easier for him
to do. When he showed his teacher, she refused to put it in the kiln and is
failing him, giving him an E. The reason she is failing him is because she
was offended. I went to the superintendant of the school, who agreed with
the teacher. I believe this is discrimination. They teach my son about
Hitler in history class, but yet he cant make a art project out of what he
was learning? Hitler is a part of our history if we like him or not. What if
my son chose Jesus, and our teacher was offended by that and failed him?
Where does it stop?

I have a 9 year old son (in the 4th grade). We moved to Texas from California 2 years ago. In California my son was an honor student and made straight A's. He never had anything lower than an A. My sons grades were a's when he began the 4th grade. He was happy with his teachers and very comfortable in class. In January the school switched one of his teachers to another grade level and brought in a new teacher in his class. In 3 weeks my sons grade dropped from an A to a C. The teacher never told there was problem and for 2 months I tried to get a parent teacher conference and finally got one yet his teacher did not show. She had another teacher of his give the conference. This teacher has made comments to my son "what a great example your parents are setting for you" when she doesn't agree with my husband and I. If you have an email address or a phone number please email it to me so I can go into further detail as this only allows so much detail. Little more detail below

This is related to my previous post. Yes we all know that teachers are not angels and that a lot are quite horrible. What are some of the exceptions that give an good name to the profession? What are their characteristics?

My son is 5 (to be 6 in Nov). I don't know what his grade level is for reading but he reads and understands books from the Magic Tree House/School Bus series easily. He loves Beverly Cleary books and can read those independently. He can do double digit addition with carrying over. He understands fractions, how to tell time etc. He loves to learn and will enthusiastically learn what ever you teach him. His kindergarten teacher does enrichment activities with him during his "center" time. He loves school.

How unusual is it for a five year old to be able to read and do math at this level in kindergarten? (Maybe it's not so unusual?) I don't have any frame of reference and I'm reluctant to discuss this with friends for fear of seeming obnoxious. "My kid is so smart." We are considering private school and this feedback would help. Is there any point to having him tested? We would never have him skip a grade.

I constantly feel pressurized and stressed out by the amount of workload and tests at my current school (which is one of the best in the country). I am tired of getting few hours of sleep everyday to study for tests and for homework, and I dislike the fact that I am competing with everyone in my school; what makes it worse is that I crumble under pressure. Should I change to a school which has a less pressurizing and stressful environment? I think I will be happier and do better there. Do you think it is worth it changing my excellent school education for an average one and exchange it for two years of happier school days?

Thank you.

I live in the south and there are a lot of overweight kids blocking the hallways. In my high school, they only require Physical Education for 2 years, however, I believe that anyone above a certain BMI should have PE until they get their BMI down to an acceptable level, because health is more important than anything they will learn in the classroom. I am in the process of petitioning the school board. Thank you and good day.
