Check out the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students for good information. It costs a lot of money -thousands plus you lose one year of school. Do what I did - study a language in high school then study abroad in college where you get college credit and it is really good for your future. Host families do not have fingerprint-based criminal background checks so you have to watch out where you end up.

Sure you can, but I not sure what they will exchange you for...maybe a donkey...ha ha ha
There are many student exchange programs around the world. The orginal idea was that one school in one country sends a student to another country. In these programs there is not need to meet certain entrance requirements.
However such systems are becoming less popular as students are increasingly going to study in other countries. The most popular approaches are to go boarding schools and there are a range of excellent ones around the world. Australia has many schools like this in both city and country areas. Partly because it allows children from country areas to study in the city.
When studying highschool in another country consider carefully the nature of the school curriculum, because this may create problems for you if you then return back home or wish to do further studies.
Many schools around the world teach British A-levels which are internationally recognised, while many International schools (schools that specialise in International students) teach the International Baccalaurete.

Go to afsusa.org It is a great program; I volunteer for it.
You are able to pick a country, provided you get your stuff in on time, some countries are very popular. There are scholarships through AFS and possibly your local chapter. There are also a list of ways to raise money for your program.
Experiencing life in another culture is one of the best things a high school student can do. Good Luck, I hope you can go!!

Do it the way I did it:
Go to the Youth For Understanding website. You can print out an application and get lots of information from them. You fill out the form (including the extra things for one of the many scholarships they offer), send it in, and wait.
You'll learn if you got a scholarship in a little while.
I'm a C student, and I got a scholarship to go to Japan.
If I can do it, anyone can.
If you have any more questions, email me.

Generally, exchange students are above average, but you never know. Talk to your counselor and express your desires. Then, fill out all the paperwork, the endless paperwork.
