my neighbor who is in college now got 1500 hours in 4 years-- still don't know how she did it

Yes, it has been in existence for a number of years. It is not a specific course that kids can take as in some schools but rather run as a volunteer program. Among the things that kids do are; read and help in senior citizen communities, beach and shoreline clean up activities, serving meals to homeless people on various holidays, candy stripe work at hospitals, food drives, toy drives, and being reading buddies to elementary school kids in our area. We are also in California.

Yes, we do. We need 60 hours by the end of 2nd semester senior year. I go to a cathloic school and so if we have the 60 hours in before that time, we won't have to take a relgion class second semester of senior year. Which means we get to get out an hour of school before everybody else does! Don't worry about it! Its not even alot. I already have 130 and I m halfway through high school! Hope this helps!
I volunteer at the library, vacation bible school, etc.

I have heard of some high schools and some colleges considering making community service needed for graduation. I have not heard of any large scale implementation of the plan though.

The people for it argue that it makes the student a more rounded person and that it teaches social responsibility.

Those who argue against it say that it is like slavery. It is forcing people to do work against their will that is not a form of punishment.

I don't believe it is mandatory. However, to be in some groups or clubs (like Rotary Club), I think they have community service as a criteria. Just think of if as a way you can give back to your community. Not all community service is connected to the penal system!

If you plan to go to college, it is a part of your senior portfolio. Universities are looking for good well-rounded students, not just ones with a high GPA.
