This is related to my previous post. Yes we all know that teachers are not angels and that a lot are quite horrible. What are some of the exceptions that give an good name to the profession? What are their characteristics?

My best teacher in grade school was Mrs. LaCombe, 4th grade. She was pleasant all the time. She showed an interest in each student. With me specifically, she encouraged me to excel. She did it very simply, by telling me I could achieve and that she believed in me.

She also spent time trying new ways to present to the class. She did not do it the same way, day in and day out. Keeping it fresh kept us from being bored. Plus, with various techniques, if you didn't understand one way, maybe you could understand another.

My youngest daughters current teacher is an angel. She is so strict, but consistant and fair. The kids know where they stand, what is ok and what is not. She is working them so hard yet they all love her. On a Friday - they all get a treat, (ten minutes extra on the playtime) with the exception of anyone who has been bad!

As a parent, consultations have been a delight, she really knows the kids inside out. When she talks to you, she is organised, has stats to back up what she is saying, examples of work (good and bad), and a plan going forward.

Wow, why cant they all be like her.

A really good teacher is one who genuinely likes kids, genuinely loves their subject and is passionate about sharing their knowledge. A really good teacher will also not mind if a student doesn't love the subject they're teaching but will still try to teach them well. The best type of teachers have no 'favourites' in their classes and are fair and consistent.

I take more professional approach.

The best teacher to me, is a person who knows the subject well and beyond the level he/she actually teaches. He/she also has to be able to explain the topic in depth, and answer questions in full.

All other character issues are secondary, as if the teacher doesn't know the subject, all bets are off....

A good teacher will do whatever it takes to make you learn something. I had a math teacher once and I asked a questions and he said to me, "are you stupid?" I never asked another question in that class and in turn failed it. I think what makes a good teacher is one that makes learning interesting and one that gets the class involved and makes learning fun.

The best type is the teacher who students can relate to. Who students can respect, yet he/she is fun. So i guess the teacher has to be highly educated and wise.

One who teaches math, reading, spelling, etc. is not always a good teacher. One who teaches students is the best teacher!

Perhaps the best way to answer this question is with a question: what is a teacher's primary goal (and it is not "to teach")? Once you answer my question, you'll have the answer to yours.
