This year has been a learning process for me, but schools will only accept you if you communicate with your prof-of-interest post-interview and let him/her know this is *the* (only) program for you and why. Although I ended up finding one program to be a best fit, how to deal with the moral ambiguity of leading 2+ grad programs on (in order to get accepted). What do you do if you're not a deceitful person/believe in honesty & integrity?

The LSE website says it offers most PhD programs part-time. I am seriouly interested in starting a PhD in Management at LSE in September 08/09 part-time but I don't know if I am wasting my time applying? Does anyone know anyone has done a PhD there and how tough it is to get in? Money is not an issue.

I will be 30 then and I already have a BA(Hons) in Management and an MBA. I work for a Big Four Consultancy as a Senior Consultant and the majority of my role is Project Management. I also have various professional qualifications.

I heard that admissions for undergraduate degrees at the top US schools is more competitive than the admission for the graduate schools, since there is lower quota for undergraduate degrees..
Is that true?

I am a married mother of 4 girls. (12, 10, 4 & 2 years) I have been working full time since graduation and have always wanted to go back to school to become a teacher, but could never seem to find the time or money. Recently I was talking to my husband about being a stay at home mom and he agreed that I could quit my job, stay home and we would manage. I began to think about what I would do if something happend to him and i am left with 4 girls and no real way to support them. I have worked in child care for 3 years before and have been working the last 6 years for an attorney taking in traffic tickets. I can answer phones and make my way around a computer and fax machine but other then that I have no real skills. I have been thinking about going back to school full time to become a teacher but I am concerned about the costs and how long it will take. I am also feeling guilty about not being there for my girls, I know in the long run this will be better for all of us.

So, it's May 1, and I am totally stuck. I'm a self-proclaimed nerd from Los Angeles. I want to major in political science and, if it's offered, print journalism.
Berkeley:
Pros: Farther from home, nicer area, more overall prestigious, more intellectual, probably a better social scene for me
Cons: Huge classes, huge dorms, huge...everything, not much of a support system, no j-school and all that would provide

USC:
Pros: Fantastic journalism school, nicer campus, smaller classes, more supportive atmosphere
Cons: Not as academically prestigious overall, sporty/preppy/party atmosphere would be somewhat wrong for me, not great neighborhood, much closer to home
I don't know which school's paper is better - I've read them both and like them equally, but any experience at what it's like to work at one or thoughts differentiating the two would be great. Yes, this is an important factor.

Costs would end up being about the same.

I need help. My parents want me to pursue a career in medicine but I think I am more interested in a physics career. I sometimes think that if I will follow what I like more and pursue a career in physics, I will regret this later in life as I don't get a very large salary. But if I follow my parents, I am afraid too that I'll regret this also because I don't get to work on what interests me most. Need help.

My sister is a high school senior(lives in NJ). She is wondering if she should apply to her reach schools. She's very smart(in the gifted program), currently taking 5 AP courses(has ~ an A- average in all of them), SAT score of 1410, overall GPA of 3.9. Her class ranking isn't the best, since she goes to a rather competitive small school(85 students in her class), so she's not in the top 10% but she is in the top 12%.

The thing is, my parents are discouraging her because they're afraid that she won't get in and will just be wasting money on app fees, or that she'll get in but have no scholarships or grants given to her. They also claim that she doesn't have a "chance" if she didn't do sports in high school.

What do you think? Does she have a chance? Should she apply, or continue to look at "safety schools"?
