I go to a school that uses units, but I'm going to transfer to a school that uses credit hours. I had never heard of credit hours before in my life, so I decided to look it up. Basically, you get one credit (hour) for every 50 minutes in class. So if a class is 3 credit hours and meets twice a week, that's pretty much 1.5 hrs each day.

In the USA for a long time a standard semester was 14 weeks and a standard college class was three one-hour lecture sessions a week for the whole semester (in other words, 42 total hours). A standard class is called a 3 semester hour class because in theory it meets 3 hours a week for the whole semester term.
In the last 50 years there have been all kinds of variations on this - so sometimes classes meet for two 2 hour sessions, or one 3hr45min session for 11 weeks, etc etc. But somehow they have to make a class match up to that old time standard.
In some cases a class has 3 hours of lecture plus a lab session that lasts for 2 to 3 hours. Usually labs are counted as 1 semester hour, no matter how long they last. So, a class that meets for about 3 hours of lecture and discussion and has a lab meeting of 2 hours would count as a 4 semester hour course.
Some schools operate on a quarter system instead of semesters, so that is another whole different thing!

3 credits is a regular class, usually meets 2-3 times a week for about an hour. Often science classes are more like 4 or 5 credits because they take more time for the labs and such.
