I need help. My parents want me to pursue a career in medicine but I think I am more interested in a physics career. I sometimes think that if I will follow what I like more and pursue a career in physics, I will regret this later in life as I don't get a very large salary. But if I follow my parents, I am afraid too that I'll regret this also because I don't get to work on what interests me most. Need help.

I think it all depends on which matters most to you, money or happiness. If you know that you will be happy with a career in physics even if the pay isn't good, then I would go that route. But if you don't want to struggle with finances and you think you would be okay with what you do, then go for a career in medicine. If I were in your position, I would choose what would make me the happiest. There is no reason to go through life working at a job that you don't really like, wishing you had choosen another career path.

I think you have to ask yourself this very important question. If you go into medicine, do you believe that, because of your lack of enthusiasm and real interest and dedication, you will be the best doctor you could possibly be? I think that if you don't have a compelling and intense interest in helping people become healthy, it wouldn't be fair to your future patients. I also believe that a person needs to follow his or her heart. Doing something as difficult and as physically and emotionally draining as being a physician is, and having to get up every single day for the next 30 or 40 years and doing something you never had a desire to do in the first place, would be very hard on your soul.

Do you want to have money when you grow up, or be happy. All people in medicine don't make big bucks, but some physicists to. Follow your heart.

What is your objective? To build a huge nest egg for retirement, or to have a fullfilling career?

You will be more successful doing something you love rather than doing something that makes a lot of money. There is more to life than a paycheck.
