I want to have DVR capability and I'm trying to decide if renting one from comcast would be the best way to go or would it be more beneficial to purchase a standalone DVR? Sure comcast is cheaper to rent but after what, 18 months I'll have spent the money it takes to purchase a DVR. What do you suggest?

I recently moved to my uncle's house, who has DirecTV programming. He's had a Tivo box for a few years and it is simply amazing. The other day I went to Best Buy and purchased a DirecTV-branded DVR (I think it's the R15) because they didn't have any Tivo boxes for DirecTV. After several nights of frustration with the user interface and overall poor design, I have decided to look elsewhere for a new Tivo-branded DVR.

I called DirecTV and they say that I can no longer buy a Tivo-branded DVR for DirecTV programming...at least thru them.

My question is: Can I still buy a Tivo DVR for DirecTV somewhere? Anywhere? And if I could, how easy would it be for me to get rid of my current p.o.s. and set up the Tivo unit?

*And I'm not looking to ebay for this; I've only heard bad things about people selling units that haven't been de-authorized.

Tivo? What I'm trying to do is get a DVR with a hard drive, and DVD recorder/player for my house. But the ones I find online mostly require a monthly subscription to TIVO. What company would make a product like what I'm looking for? How big are the hard drives? What kind of DVDs can you play?

I have cable but the company doesn't provide a DVR service so I need a system I can hook upto my TV apart from my cable box.

How do I make a dvd on my UK Sony HXD910 recorder that I can send to the US and will play there on NTSC equipment. Or is the US similar to us, in that most recent players/TV's will display picture and sound from home burnt DVDs that have no region code. (I want to send a family home move on dvd) ( I know how to copy dub etc with the machine, it's the NTSC bit that's puzzling me, I cant see anything in the menu's or the handbook!)

I want to find something like tivo that still has the lifetime subscription (and might be cheaper), but still has all the same easy to use functions.

I was only planning on using my cell phone and did not intend to sign up for a land based phone. I just had it installed the other day and am considering cancelling and going with the local cable company. Thank you for any help!
