Tivo? What I'm trying to do is get a DVR with a hard drive, and DVD recorder/player for my house. But the ones I find online mostly require a monthly subscription to TIVO. What company would make a product like what I'm looking for? How big are the hard drives? What kind of DVDs can you play?

Toshiba makes one with a 160-GB HD.

I am sure you can find others - you can probably get Scientific Atlanta boxes, which are what many of the cable companies use.

But most nonTivo DVR users have either satellite or cable, and those providers generally offer a DVR box/service for a monthly rent. Paying $7/month to Time Warner is a lot cheaper than buying my own box for several hundred dollars. And that means it is not really cost effective for manufacturers and retailers to sell directly to consumers.

Windows Media Center Computers are now coming with TV inputs and capabilities of controling the cable box. This means your computer functions as a DVR. If you have internet connection, then you can get the schedule info from the internet for free. Add in a DVR burner, and you have the total package. It is a bit more expensive than some DVRs, but it is probably the way of the future.

Circuit City has a few. Also, they have some very informative customer reviews. Good luck!
