I want to have DVR capability and I'm trying to decide if renting one from comcast would be the best way to go or would it be more beneficial to purchase a standalone DVR? Sure comcast is cheaper to rent but after what, 18 months I'll have spent the money it takes to purchase a DVR. What do you suggest?

Yeah but if you buy one, in 18 months they would have released two models with higher storage capacity, and your's will have broken twice. I have been a comcast customer for about a year and half, and have had to swap my box out multiple times for it failing and once to upgrade it. There is already another upgrade available for HDMI, but I don't need that now as component is more than fine.. Point is, IF the units were reliable (they are not even close), and IF there weren't so many changes to them (there are), I would say go for it. As it stands now, I would say rent.

Currently with Comcast you can only rent a DVR. They are 9.95/month and you can either pick one up at a local office or call customer care and set up an service appt. for an installer to come out. The service fee varies. In Middle TN its $33.47.

You should definately rent! I have comcast also, and I rent two DVR's from them. If anything ever goes wrong(service), they fix it for free. Not to mention it's only like $4.00 more to add a DVR box.

Considering that you probably need a box for digital/HD service anyways you should rent as it will be in one box instead of having the cable box and a DVR box too.

I would buy one because it would end up saving you money in the long run, just as you had previously mentioned.
