Software - February 2007

I use my computer a lot; I use Word for my job about 8 hours per day. To entertain myself, I have high speed internet, so I chat, and watch videos. Some people say my PIII computer is old, but I don’t need anything fancier. I kept Win98 as long as I could. I didn’t want Win XP, my computer worked a lot faster with Win98. But the new versions of MSN messenger didn’t work with Win98, and the new Windows Media Player wouldn’t work with Win98. I don’t like Win XP, I felt Win98 was more than enough for me, but I was bullied into updating it 2 years ago. If Microsoft bullies me to get Vista, not only will I have to buy that stupid software, I’ll have buy a new computer just to run some heavy OS just so I can use a simple software as Word. Vista is probably full of features I’ll never need.

Why does Microsoft bullies people into getting software with unnecessary features?
How much time do I have before I get bullied into updating to Vista?

How do I enable subtitles in Nero 7? I have "Pan's Labyrinth" and want the subtitles (since it is in spanish) but I don't have an option? Any help would be appreciated!

I had used the data validation function in excel but that is not working anymore. I had re-inputted the validation, but it is still not working on that particular sheet. When I use the same data validation function in another sheet, it is working fine. Would anyone please help? Thanks a lot.

I've downloaded bittorent software but cannot download any torrents. I get the torrent file but when I try to download it nothing happens. The bar turns red and the log just says cannot find tracker, what does this mean? I don't understand, help!!

All my files completed downloading and they end with extention .r00 --- How do I play them with like Windows Movie Maker or quicktime?

I recently formatted my hardrive, and I now cannot install many of my games that were previosuly on the computer (under the same OS). The installation gets part way through, and then says something along the lines of "This File does not match the file in the setup's .cab file The medium from which you are running the setup maybe corrupted.


This has happened with CD versions of Rome total war, Medieval Total War 2, Age of Empires 2, some random game I can't remember now and Morrowind 3.
It has also happened with Virtual CD versions (ie iso mounted with daemon) of Rome total war and age of empires 2 (perfectly legal as I own the CD versions)

Oddly enough i was able to instal medieval total war and age of empires 1

What is up with my computer: is it a software or hardware problem?
I run XP home on nVidia nforce 3 motherboard with amd 64plus and 1GB of RAM

i do a hell of a lot of downloading(since bt have stopped the 40gb cap and changed it to unlimited)and i wonder if there is any good download managers avalible for download
i use one at the moment called"gigaget" but i thought i would give some others a go
any ideas?

when i reinstalled my acrobat it installed successfully but it is not opening..it says "acrobat had encountered problem and needs to close.. sorry for inconvienience"..i removed and reinstalled it 4 times..i think i have som probs vth its registry keys or else some thing else..can anyone help to make it ouit solved..plzzzzzz

This is in my computer in Prefetch. When I send it to recycle bin, and delete it, it comes back! I have AVG anti-virus but it does not recognise it. Zone Alarm has it in Program Control and I have managed to disable it there, but that is not getting rid of it.
Can anybody enlighten me please?

I've installed Roxio DVD burner on a Dell Desktop but I still can't burn DVD's. Is this a hardware problem? Do I just need too find the right DVD burner. The desktop has a dual drive and can burn and copy CD's, but when I put a DVD-RW in the DVD drive and try too burn, the tray ejects the disk and prompts me too put a disk in the drive. Does the computer just not like me?

I have a list of 30000 last names, most of which I don't care about, but 200 or so I do. And I have a table of the names that I do care about. I want to be able to flag the cells which contain the names that I care about, so I can just sort out the other names. I named my table with the good names "goodnames", so I figure I should be able to say something like: =if(A1=goodnames,"good", "bad"), but this logic doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions

have to do this presentation on how Perestroika and Glasnost caused the collapse of the Soviet Union.
If any one can help me out with the front page of the presentation.. that would be great. (Im using microsoft powerpoint)

What to include:

Title: Glasnost & Perestroika

Pictures: Glasnost means oppenness... like no censorship and perestroika means restructuring. Pics of Mikhail Gorbachev. Maybe a broken sign with USSR written on it.

Is it possible to display numbers as positive and negative or as text? I am showing the movement of something in a chart. At the moment the formula in the column gives the answers as -3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3 etc, I would like to display as: down 3, down 2, down 1, same, up 1, up2, up 3. or if that is not possible then -1,-2,-3,0,+1,+2,+3

the player is set to download the avi codecs automatically on opening one through wmv player, but when i open an avi file through wmv11 it only acquires the audio codec and not the video codec. the settings are ok adn i've checked it with the help file, but it doesn't download the video codec of avi file. what do u think could be the problem?
