512MB of RAM is the minimum requirement to install windows vista... users running vista with only 512MB of RAM wont be able to run Vista with windows Aero (which one of the main reason to buy vista) Vista without windows Aero (running with 512MB ram) is just lame! to experience full windows vista with Aero you need at least 1GB of RAM... but it is recommended if you add another 512MB of RAM so it becomes (1.512 RAM) Vista would run alot smoother.... and it is also depends on the Processor the computer is using... even though you have 1GB of RAM but youre running it with Pentium 4 Processor (vista won't run as smooth as expected) i recommend you to get a dual core pc (Pentium D, Xeon, Core 2 Duo) or even better Quad CORE!!! (Core 2 Extreme/ Core 2 Quad) but if you're buying Pentium 4 Based PC i would recommend you leave it as it is 1GB of RAM but just probably buy a Graphic Card (ATI RADEON etc.) so you can run Vista smoothly)

That's over the amount required to run Vista, but 1 Gb is a good number. Make sure you can add memory later if you want to. Best you buy 2 Gb, since most computers have 2 slots and they divide it into 2 chips. So to upgrade you have to replace one of the chips.

sorry to report that you would be wise to get a new computer if your interested in Vista.
after buying a (Vista ready) computer i was sadly disappointed when i bought and tried to install Vista on my old xp computer Vista blocked three of my older programs stating they were not compatible with windows Vista, i have used these programs as a very important part on my education studies and now they must be replaced with a costly Microsoft upgrade.
it has caused me to re-think my idea of why I got the vista in the first place, i have since re-installed xp and I'm back in business, maybe after i get out of school I'll try it with a complete new computer but not untill they get the bugs out.

If you are going to run home basic the recommends is 512 so you should be good. If you are planning on running Home premium/business or ultimate, you will have just enough according to the specs. I wouldn't recommend running it with the bare minimum as it may seem slow.

Yes, 1GB is fine.
Make sure it has a dual core processor.
Also if it is a desktop make sure it has a PCI Express X16 slot on the motherboard.
