I use my computer a lot; I use Word for my job about 8 hours per day. To entertain myself, I have high speed internet, so I chat, and watch videos. Some people say my PIII computer is old, but I don’t need anything fancier. I kept Win98 as long as I could. I didn’t want Win XP, my computer worked a lot faster with Win98. But the new versions of MSN messenger didn’t work with Win98, and the new Windows Media Player wouldn’t work with Win98. I don’t like Win XP, I felt Win98 was more than enough for me, but I was bullied into updating it 2 years ago. If Microsoft bullies me to get Vista, not only will I have to buy that stupid software, I’ll have buy a new computer just to run some heavy OS just so I can use a simple software as Word. Vista is probably full of features I’ll never need.

Why does Microsoft bullies people into getting software with unnecessary features?
How much time do I have before I get bullied into updating to Vista?

well it all depends. it depends on what your company puts in place. for instance, at my job, we just got xp machines a few months ago. so it will be a long while before we ever upgrade to vista. as far as your personal use, just think that there are still upgrades and applications for windows 2000. so it will be a while before they decide to not support xp anymore. you can use it as long as you want. just stick to applications that are for xp. that means not always going with the latest version of stuff. hope that helps. oh and microsoft is a big bully. until more people start using macs, it will always be that way.

What you're describing in terms of not having access to the newer versions of Media Player and MSN Messenger is called a "killer application". A killer application (commonly shortened to killer app) is a computer program that is so useful or desirable that it proves the value of some underlying technology, such as a gaming console, operating system, or piece of computer hardware. It sounds like you'll be upgrading the minute they make versions of these software applications that won't run on XP. I'm pretty sure you'll have at least a year or two before upgrading to Vista becomes mandatory.

Why does Microsoft bully people into upgrading to the latest operating system? Well there's two sides to that story. On one hand, as technology improves the software also needs to improve to take advantage of the newly available resources. Theoretically, Vista should perform functions leaps and bounds ahead of XP. Things like encoding video, manipulating sound, image processing, etc. But on the other hand, you have the almighty dollar. Microsoft doesn't make money supporting old operating systems. They make money selling (or rather licensing) software.

i'm positive it is going to run XP. I absolutely have placed XP on quite a few computer's that had Win98 so that you need to be reliable to pass. Get an improve disk(their more affordable than an entire version) and do a "sparkling set up" of XP. save any information you pick to save on CD/DVD and placed the XP disc in at the same time as operating residing house windows. Then pick a custom set up as a replace of an improve. I absolutely have not at all performed an improve that did not have issues. you want to do a "sparkling set up" and make positive you've the Ethernet driver to position in once you're finished installation residing house windows or you gained't get on-line to position in the different drivers or Updates. pass to the Mfg. help web site for drivers and procure the chipset driver first even if it really is obtainable. the first replace you'd be presented is SP3. Agree and procure it. there'll be about 40 5 different Updates. reliable success and characteristic thrilling.

the answer for your first question is it because it is marketing strategies.

for second question, i think sooner or later you need to buy new computer for the windows vista but not until the compability issue of some software and hardware has resolve.
you cannot use your current system for windows vista because of hardware requirements, this also the reason why windows xp run slow on your system. windows xp need a 256mb of RAM for its stability.

the reason why you need to buy new computer are
1. Microsoft stop support on Windows 98
2. Some latest software and hardware don't support Windows 98 anymore.
3. Even some website need some program for you to view there site in which the program doesn't support windows 98.
4. Windows 98 have been mastered by hackers.

but if you just use your computer just for typing document i think you dont need to buy a new one.

Windows XP support at Microsoft goes untill 2012, if memory serves. If your PC meets your needs, enjoy!

By 2012, your PIII will likely be long dead. When it dies, that's when you should look deeper into Vista (or Mac or Linux).

BTW, Microsoft bullies people to buy Vista to help their corporate friends sell new and more expensive hardware and Bill has kids to send to college!

I wouldn't be in a hurry look at windows 98 then along came milin/2000 that was a piece of crap. XP has been around for quite a while NOW and is working good, I say wait and let them get all the bugs out of vista first.

You still have a few more years. I think software developers still make programs for Windows 98 and up. Don't they? It's up to you... how long do you want to keep your current computer? Like yourself, I also have a Pentium III. I am currently building a newer and more up to date machine to run Vista Service Pack 2 whenever that comes out.

I would say at least 5-10 years. I agree with you, you should keep XP as long as you can, especially because the next Windows operating system is set to debut in 2009.

You definitely don't have to use Microsoft any more.

I am using UBUNTU on all five of my computers now (four pentium III and one pentium IV). It's easy to install and use.

If you get a Linux distribution you gain access to thousands of free programs.

Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

All of these operating systems are more
reliable than either XP or Vista and will
make better use of your hardware for
longer.

Why would you want to pay money to be
abused?
