Yesterday I ran a scan with the free version of AVG anti-virus and once I began the scan, it said it found a virus. A list of choices came up and the highlighted one was to heal it, so I pressed that. However, my computer then shut off and now it just loops during the startup phases, and cannot just restarts after the page that says Microsoft Windows XP. I cannot get onto safe mode or last known good config either. My guess is that when I clicked to heal, it actually activated the virus. My computer was working just fine before this. Is there any way to save my computer without having to reformat it?

I recently purchased one cheap ("As Is"), second hand laptop for my children. I have just noted (viewing the content of the "Temporary Internet Files and History Settings") it came with a number of "cookies" and temporary Internet files from adult/sex websites that I want to DELETE (mostly JPEG and GIG images, HTML documents, Shockwave Flash Objects, JScripts, icons, PNG files, cascading style sheet documents, etc; all from adult/sex websites). Also, in "History", under "Most Visited", there are some more addresses of the same nature that I want to delete.

Although I have succesfully deleted many of these cookies/temporary files by right-clicking on them and then executing "DELETE", there are some stubborn ones that cannot be deleted by this procedure.

Since I am NOT savvy on computer/IT matters, I would appreciate if you could help me with a DETAILED, STEP-BY-STEP procedure to delete ALL of these unwanted cookies/files.

Many thanks for your helpful hand, fellows!

After a spyware scare, I am trying to secure my home network. I have Internet Explorer 7 and am limiting all the addons, etc. with that. I have read that Firefox is more secure and woudl like to use that as my main browser, with I.E. 7 only for windows updates and those websites that don't work well with Firefox. Is this really risky?

Also, I would like to secure them but am not sure which addons are best. Windows and Firefox point you to addons, but with Firefox, the addons are often unverified or unsigned(?). Is there any reputable website that certifies/checks them?

Thanks,

D

I have read you should not run more than one antivirus program at the same time. Does that only apply to real time scanning / shield? After trying EVERY internet security suite after problems with Trend Micro’s early 2007 version. I am now back with Trend Micro Security Suite 2007 (past bugs fixed apparently). However, to be extra safe I would like to run scheduled daily scans by AVG, single scans only no resident shields or real time protection? Will this cause conflicts too?

I am currently running Ad Aware, Spyware Sweeper, and the Trend Micro Spyware Sweep with no apparent problems there.

Thanks for any tips.

I was recently given a used PC as a gift.

Since it was given to me through someone else, I don't know the person who had it before I received it. Therefore, I'd like to clean it out just to be safe.

I understand how to permanently clean an entire hard drive, but I don't want to do that because I've already installed some programs and I don't want to go to the trouble of re-installing so much. (The erasure program I use is "Sure Delete," BTW.)
I've already used the "Recycle Bin" and the "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files" options, but I understand that they don't permanently delete pictures and some other items from the hard drive.
How can I delete files that may have been downloaded online, if they've already been deleted through the "Delete Files?"
How can I find files that have been deleted through "Delete Files" but not totally deleted? I'd like to find and delete everything that was there before I got the computer (without deleting the hard drive).
Thanks.

Im currently having a hard time right now. I unfortunately am on unemployment, to accesss my page to get my check I have a password. I used the password Im thinking of several times and now it suddenly doesn't work. I can also call it in but the problem is I need a password there also. The biggest problem is I have to enter the information on a weekly basis on Sunday's. I was told that my hard drive has all the passwords I have ever used somewhere. My question is. Is there a way to find the password hidden on my hard drive somewhere? If so I would really like to know how so I can file my claim. Thanks
