Hi Jelly, well, that is a bit of a predictament huh? Well, first you need to unhide your files and folders, so do this please:

Go to Control Panel, then double click on Folder Options. Once the dialog box has opened click on the View Tab. On this tab are several settings you need to uncheck in order to unhide system files and folders. Go down the list and do the following::

Under "Hidden Files and Folders" put a check mark in "Show hidden files and folders"

Uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known file types.

Uncheck the box in front of "Hide protected operating system files.

Make sure there is a check mark in the box in front of "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.

Click Apply, then OK, and you are set for your next steps.

Now, in order to locate your hidden file click Start, then Search.

In the first window click on All Files and Folders, and in the next window at the top data entry box type the name or part of the name of your file. Make sure the C Drive is selected, don't put anything in the center box, unless you know for sure a portion of a phrase in the file itself. Also, make sure you have selected to search in hidden files You also may need to turn off the indexed search or make sure non-indexed files and folders, depending upon the OS version your are using Windows XP or Vista.

Now, click Search and wait while it goes through your drive and find the file. Once it has found the hidden file, take that letter off the front which hid it in the first place! I can't remember what letter does this action as I never use this to hide files or folders as I worried about this happening with mine too. ;-)

Now, it is very easy to set a password on a file. You do need to know a couple of facts about password protecting files and folders.

First, you can set a password on a file and place that file into a folder. You can't place a password on the cantaining folder itself, only on the contents of the folder, be it files, or subfolders and files within the subfolders.

Second, each time you add a file to the folder you have to reset the password because new additions are not covered by the password. While the other original files and subfolders have the original password, additions don't. So, what you have to do is take off the password, add the file(s), then place the password back on the files. This is true on compression as well. When you add files to a compressed folder all data in that folder which was originally compressed stays compressed, but additons do not become compressed simply because the file was added to a compressed folder. You have to uncompress the data then recompress it to include new additons.

To password protect a file, right click on that file, select properties, and then click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the General Tab. A window will appear with some options. At the bottom of the window is the option to encrypt the contents of the file or folder. Place a check mark in the box in front of that option, and when you click apply or OK, a window will appear which allows you to place a password on that file or folder. Just type in the password and follow any other instuctions.

You can obain information about this process from the Help Center. You can access the Help Center from the Start Menu. Just click Start-Help and the Help Center will open.

Once the Help Center opens just put Encyption in the search box and articles in the Help Center, from Microsoft Online Help and KB Articles will appear in a list to the left of the screen. Just browse the list, click on the other listing heading to open the other lists, as the Help Center articles will first appear, and the other two at the bottom. You can go from one list to the other with a click of the mouse. Once you see a subject which interests you just click on it and it will either open to the right in the Help Center or your browser will open with the relevent article opened.

There is a lot of information at hand in the Help Center and Online at different websites. I like Wikipedia for obtaining indepth information about all sorts of computer technical stuff. I also like a website called How Stuff Works. It contains many articles about different subjects which are easy to read and very interesting. Wikipedia is also a good way to learn things as each article has linked articles to help a reader gather more information on a word or subject that the reader may be weak on. For example, if you read about encryption links can give you full explanations or words used, or link to articles which give a fuller understanding of the subject. I really like using Wikipedia. I have Wikipedia as one of my major search engines up in the right corner of my IE7 browser.

One last bit of information: It is really important you don't forget the password to your User Account. You see, if you forget your password and try to access your data by creating a new account you won't be able to do so. Each User Profile has a Unique Global Identifier, or a GUID, and each account created, even if it has the exact same user name and password has a different GUID. This GUID is never reused, regardless of how much time passes. So, if you forget your User Password and you need somebody to access your data for you from a Administrator Account, they can take ownership of your account, but this will cost you all of your password on all your files. Even an Administrator is unable to access files password protected via the Encrypting File System. So, don't forget your password. Also, it is a good idea to choose one password to apply to all of your files you wish to password protect. Having one password for all is a safe way to never forget that password, while using additional passwords for each folder is a sure way to forget one or more and never be able to access that data again. Once you forget your password kiss that data goodbye. You may as well delete is as you won't open it.

Good luck and much success in finding your missing file and learning how to use the Windows NTFS Encryption feature. Which is the way you password protect your files.
