No cookie are just things that remember thing for easier acess. Like the pop down menu when you search for something. In Mozilla's Firefox press ctrl+shift+delete it will up the menu. Not only does it increase the speed, but it helps with confidentiality. Spyware uses that information so if you don't scan often, be sure to delete internet files.

Don't know about deleting cookies from FireFox, but I DO know that the other 2 answers I see already are correct.
Cookies are the website's way of knowing who you are. They normally contain your login ID, and any preferences you have set for that site. It does no harm to your system to delete them, and because they take up space on your hard drive, removing them will increase your hard drives' seek time because it won't have all those cookie files to search. (Even more so if you have tons of cookies and get rid of them).
The next time you go to a site (after you have deleted the cookies), the site will send you another cookie. This is true for every website &/or web page that you browse.
Good luck.

Cookies are actually ways that your computer is recognized on the internet. When you go to your yahoo account, if you checked remember me for 2 weeks, your computer gets a cookie for two weeks that will allow you access. But sometimes you get a contaminated cookie from a bad site. You should be deleting these about every two weeks because sometimes viruses will hide in your cookies.
About Mozilla... Dont know.

Cookies let internet sites keep a record of who visited and what they looked at, this means the next time you visit the site it knows who you are and what you're interested in, deleteing them won't harm your computer but it will mean that the next time you visit this site, amongst others you will have to go through the whole log-in procedure.
To delete Cookies and Temporary Internet Files in I.E. click on tools>internet options and from the general tab click on clean History and in the next window either choose the items you want removed or click on clean all and then click on ok.
In Firefox click on edit>preferences>privacy
