Malware include viruses trojans and lots of things we spend money on to protect ourselfs from. But why? I understand spyware to make money but viruses? viruses don't make you any money and ruin alot of peoples work. WHY? Why would someone do that? They get no money and face jail. What turns someone to want to ruin hundreds of peoples homecomputers (not macs) it's not nice and people need to pay for anti virus software that works and then a new virus just comes alon. Why do people do this?

I use AVG, Ewido, and Ad Aware to keep the bad stuff away. When I run these scans, do they go into system restore and clean those files out? Or do the bad guys hide in there? Can I do something to open up the gates of system restore so I can do a "real" scan? If so, how?

There are those adds on the internet claiming to give away free iPods or Playstation 3, or X-box 360s, or whatever. What do those crazy links actualy do?
There is also this " http://www.getitfree.net/ipod/ " site, and it will send you advertising so it seems plausable they could draw to have random participants win.....but these claims are never taken seriously by me. What is the truth behind them? What other info or stuff comes up with these?

I just set a password for my one and only username for XP. The only feature I wanted out of this was to be able to lock up the PC hitting Win+L. Now, when I boot up up it asks for the password needed to log in. Perfectly normal. BUT.. Lets say I booted my PC up knowing I wasn't going to log in right away.. Now.. With the computer on the logon screen waiting for me to type in my password.. Are there any running processes running in the background as well? Is the internet connected also?(On cable modem). Could it be possibly a security issue by leaving it on the logon screen without being fully booted and your security apps 100% up and running?

Or does all this really not matter because the OS is not UP yet nor connected to the internet?

Sounds like a stupid question, but i'm just so curious.

Thanks in advance,

Dominick

Yesterday I downloaded a free program from the web,(it did'nt work anyway) and I started getting pop ups for Winantivirus,vortal.com ,search-and-see.com. Also little gray boxes with warnings.
I deleted temp and internet temp folders, recycle bin, and clearing internet history, cookies, and temp files. Still getting pop-ups.

Thanks in advance for your help.

track a email & call the person it was sent to? I emailed somebody that is out of school & they tracked it & called his office. Is that an invasion of privacy? The email was about a superbowl party by the way. Someone help please. Answers within the next hour or so would be great. Thanks.

Help, I saw someone ask about viruses and an answer about AVG software. I ran it bc I knew my computer was in bad shape. So far (it's still scanning after 2.5 hrs) it has found 64 Trojan Horses. I don't want to reformat. I've done it before and these things keep coming back. Also, today I received a "return" email that kind of showed that my computer was being used to send out spam. What do I do???? Is reformatting my best option and what software would be good to install? I've used Ghostsurf in the past, but it doesn't even seem to work now.

I'm using Microsoft Windows MCE/Professional, and would like to know if there was a way to edit the registry or Local Security Console, MMC, etc. or a third-party FREEWARE application that can allow me to selectively force any given program to have only one instance of its process running at a time. Thanks!
