Cameras can serve a number of functions. First, if folks know that the cameras are in place, it's a deterrant - they're less likely to do things in front of a camera (assuming they believe that the cameras are monitored.) Of course, that reaches a question of coverage - it might simply drive certain activities into areas not covered by the cameras.

The second function is, for lack of a better word, evidence - when something happens (and, eventually, it will), you'll have a video record of what happened.

Whether or not these are enough to counterbalance the cost/upkeep/etc of the cameras is up for debate. However, getting one installed could be shown as a "due dilligence" approach, in that the school administration was attempting to implement security, which, in this lawsuit-happy environment, can be a good thing.

Unfortunately none. We have totally taken the wrong approach to security in schools. If the kids don't behave, are disruptive, bring weapons and a bad attitude they shouldn't be ALLOWED in school. If their parents want them hanging around the house or running the neighborhood all day and not being able to spell CAT when they're 18 then they need to take them in hand. School was never supposed to be a day care. It's a wonderful opportunity given to children and their parents for the chance at an enlightened life. Keep the riffraff out and you won't need security cameras. We may only graduate half as many kids but at least the children that want an education can get one.

I think security cameras can be a big help in school. Its just not for finding if students are bring weapons and things like that. But it can help in other analysis. For example, you could notice, what company they have, how do they behave when there is a dispute, wwhat ar etheir interests, how do they come out of a difficult situation.....all this can help deciding personal touch to the studies/lessons....ot can be of great help.
From disadvantages point of view: Probably its just why to paly cop and thief with these kids....I cant see any thing else....
