The other day some, namely 4 of my friends wrote me an e-mail and asked me to quit buzzing them. I did no such a thing and found out I had about 8 attempts to hack my computer. My software caught it.

I have an external drive.
I opened terminal and issued the following commands:
cd /Volume/EXTDRIVE/
chmod -R 700 myfolder

The idea was to set the folder myfolder to read/wrtie/execute for me only and stop access to any others. The command seemed to work and all permissions were set as I had intended.

I then logged off and logged onto another user's account on the mac mini and that user could see and manipulate any file under myfolder -i.e. the permissions just seemed to belong to whoever was logged on and not to the original username.

I am so confused. I have been using unix a long time and this used to be sufficient to protect my files. Now with OS X 10.4 there seems to be no protection.

Oddly enough I cannot browse other user's documents folder for example -so the scheme is available but I cannot fathom it.

Can someone enlighten me?

I must have downloaded a virus as my computer keeps restarting itself and error messages keep appearing.
My computer shuts down and I get different messages saying to free up disk space,Check BIOS?,restart my computer. I have done all of these, I have uninstalled loads of things from my computer including a number of games. I have cleaned the fans and checked the temperature.
I have also ran my internet security and a spyware program and Windows Defender. All come up clean, with good results.

I dont understand. What can I do to solve this problem? Is it a Virus?

My computer is only 2 years old I don't want to have to get a new one.

Its a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo T Computer, Windows XP.

Everyone listen if you have an Anti virus your protected we're all tyring to say which one is the best when a virus comes out its not funny at all cause people get infected and lose computers. If we keep at least a anti virus program and are carful on our computers we wont get viruses. One: Viruses need a human being to get into your computer like me I dont open emails with attachments I dont download from the internet unless it anti virus updates or windows updates so everyone come on its not funny. Just be careful with your computer. I'm not getting rid of my laptop to soon and I'm guessing your not so be carful on the internet ok? good

of course why didnt i think of it? You see AVG and Avast last like 30 days and 90 days and then you need to pay. This is where I think. These free ones are going to say you have viruses and stuff because when it runs out you'll think you're gonno get a virus. Norton and Mcafee and other ones you pay for say you don't have a virus or spyware or internet worm because you DONT! so think about it? the others are tryin 2 make you afraid into buying it so think hope this helps people to protect their computers

Can anyone help??
I Am finally sick enough of Norton to really want to get rid of it, BUT i can't uninstall the horrible thing, I've done the usual, (Add/Remove programmes on win XP) but no joy, it comes up with an error message straight away.. (Code 9999,172) i cant get any joy from the Symantec Website or Tech Support, it wont load onto my PC, Also my PC wont allow anything to be dowmloaded from the internet (Which i suspect is caused by NIS)

Can anyone gimmie any good ideas regarding a better anti-virus??

I had a hacker get into my computer and has sent messages in my yahoo account to people. one of which was a link to porn site. i know they know what software i have installed as they mentioned one in an email to my brother in law. also the sent messages do not appear in my sent folder. i only know of the porn site one because it was not able to be delivered. i use mozilla firefox mostly and thought it would be better protection but obviously it was not. is there anyway of knowing when the intruder got in to the computer.
