Can anyone help??
I Am finally sick enough of Norton to really want to get rid of it, BUT i can't uninstall the horrible thing, I've done the usual, (Add/Remove programmes on win XP) but no joy, it comes up with an error message straight away.. (Code 9999,172) i cant get any joy from the Symantec Website or Tech Support, it wont load onto my PC, Also my PC wont allow anything to be dowmloaded from the internet (Which i suspect is caused by NIS)

Can anyone gimmie any good ideas regarding a better anti-virus??

You've probably still have some services running which is why you can't uninstall it.

1) Go to Start - Run and type msconfig.exe
2) a popup window will open, then select the Startup tab and run through the list to find any files with similar name as Norton
3) if any, uncheck the small box and restart your PC
4) after restarted, another popup box will appear .. something like .. you've changed the configuration .... just check the small box and then click OK
5) try going into Add/Remove Programs again and uninstall Norton
6) Restart your PC

See if the above helps otherwise, I would also suggest you download a registry cleaner file - CCcleaner. This is a freeware and can be downloaded from www.filehippo.com. After installing this file, open it and first go to Tools and see if you can find any Norton programs and try uninstalling it from here. If there's none as well, then click onto the Issues tab to Scan for Issues to fix and then to the Cleaner tab to analyze your PC and run cleaner.

CCleaner is a very secure program and I've been running it for a while so don't worry about corrupting your registry files or etc.

The last thing I can think of is for you to run Windows Update (optional) and reinstall the Norton software. The current version could probably had been corrupted and some uninstall file may be missing. After re-installing Norton, make sure you do a restart and then run the uninstall again. Don't forget when you reinstall and restarted the PC and before uninstalling Norton, go back to msconfig.exe popup and ascertain that Norton is unchecked from the Startup tab - the check box may still be checked as you've just did a reinstall.

Do try the above suggestions before reinstalling your Windows as this should always be your last option.

There is a removal tool that you can download from the Symantec web site to help you get rid of Norton, As for a better anti-virus try AVG free http://free.grisoft.com.

So many people have been burned use the removal tool or add/remove programs, then you still may have problems, if you can take it back to a restore time prior to installing it may work, otherwise, Completely reinstall window. Call Geek Squad if you have to this is a pain if you are not a geek.
I tell everyone I know to get McAfee ( NEVER EVER NORTON) AVG Grisoft is very good and FREE.
Not as good for people who surf alot, as McAfee.
Pencillin by trendmicro is very good also.
If you had Comcast Broadband, they give you McAfee for FREE.

My friend brought a disc with him to unitall it on my pc, unsure if it's the one mentioned by various people above. Have you tried uninstalling it in Safe Mode, you need to start your pc and keep pressing F8 before the Windows screen comes up, you should then come to a screen with various options on how to start pc, just move down to safe mode and hit Enter, this will load only the necessary things without any web stuff, then go into your removing programs part and see if it works. If it does you then need to reboot your pc, keep pressing F8 again until the screen comes up again with the start options and then choose your original start option. Hope this helps.

Your best bet is to reinstall windows, as just deleting the files will leave loads of redundant registry's which will slow down your computer, your Internet problems i suspect stem from your Norton software and if the hardware was working before are most likely software problems.
On the topic of best virus protection i recommend personal AVG as it is free and offers fairly comprehensive protection although if it isn't what you want you can always pay and get AVG pro.

Could you go back to a restore point before Norton's?

Go in to my computer and find the directory where nortons is located and delete it. If it gets rid of it fine, if it gives you problems then do a system restore.

I had the same problem.
You need to download a Norton uninstaller, it's the only way.
If you cant download it, call your internet service provider and they will do it for you.
They did for me.

I also have NIS.If you right click on the ray icon.click open status
window then click home. When it shows, click web browsing.
Then click configure which shows when you put your cursor just
under firewall. You can then clear for web access.A lot of people
advise using AVG security.Symantec pages are a no no.
