Spysweeper with AntiVirus is the best out there. It protects, catches over 170,600 threats. No other software can touch or compete with that. Stay away from the free ones. There is a reason why they are free. They are not good. Also, Norton does not hog system resources like the above mentioned. If you like Norton, then only buy Norton Systemworks, that is the only software that is good from Norton. Spysweeper is 2nd to none.

Ad-Aware SE Plus from Lavasoft. It is very good anti-spyware protection software. The scan tool scans all your drives for spyware, adware, malware, registry changes/attempts, tracking cookies, and more. There is also a live monitoring tool which only uses like 12 MB of RAM and maybe 50-150 MHz of CPU power (which is nothing if you have like a 3GHz processor, or better. Then it's only using 1-2%).

If you're talking about an anti-virus,go with AVG anti-virus free edition, i think it's the best free anti-virus out there,if you're talking about anti-spyware programs, you should try AVG anti-spyware,it was called "ewido" in the past ,but i think the VG company bought it,and i also recommend ad-aware.
Try them you won't regret it

none of them are any good at all if they are not updated. The best program is one that updates all the time with the latest virus definitions.

You can pay for a program or use any of the free ones out there.

The best way is to dump Windows, install open source software, such as Kubuntu, or Mac.
